Correlation Between Cerebral Tissue Oxygen Saturation and Oxygen Extraction Fraction During Anesthesia: Monitoring Cerebral Metabolic Demand-supply Balance During Vasopressor Administration

Klaus U. Koch et al.

Summary: This study validated the correlation between cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (SctO(2)) measured using tissue near-infrared spectroscopy and cerebral oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) measured using positron emission tomography. The results suggested that SctO(2) may reflect the changes in cerebral metabolic demand-supply balance during vasopressor treatment.

Photoplethysmography-derived approximate entropy and sample entropy as measures of analgesia depth during propofol-remifentanil anesthesia

Wanlin Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the properties of nonlinear methods derived from photoplethysmography in response to different opioid concentrations, showing that ApEn and SampEn have the potential to differentiate between low and high opioid concentrations. By carefully evaluating different coefficients, optimal performance of these methods can be achieved for quantifying analgesia depth under general anesthesia.

Simultaneous comparison of depth of sedation performance between SedLine and BIS during general anesthesia using custom passive interface hardware: study protocol for a prospective, non-blinded, non-randomized trial

James Harvey Jones et al.

Summary: This study aims to compare the performance of BIS and SedLine monitors in assessing the depth of anesthesia by analyzing the concordance between processed EEG indices and clinical assessments of anesthesia depth in 100 ASA class I-III patients. The study will also explore factors that lead to lack of agreement between these measures, such as patient factors, surgical conditions, artifacts, and anesthesia medications and doses.

Recovery of consciousness and cognition after general anesthesia in humans

George A. Mashour et al.

Summary: Studying the recovery process of consciousness from unconsciousness in healthy individuals undergoing anesthesia showed that cognitive functions recover over time, with executive function returning first, contrary to initial hypotheses. Early involvement of the prefrontal cortex in recovery is consistent with the global neuronal workspace theory.
