The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on oral health inequalities and access to oral healthcare in England

Summary: This commentary highlights the potential impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on oral health inequalities in England. Through a literature review, sales data, and analysis of dental services data, it was found that health-compromising behaviors have increased, there are clear inequalities among children and older adults, and referrals for oral cancer and hospital admissions for tooth extractions in children have dramatically declined. Many oral health programs were disrupted or suspended during the pandemic. Therefore, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated oral health inequalities, calling for prioritized investment in public health programs and reformed commissioning pathways for oral healthcare services.
