Global change in hepatitis C virus prevalence and cascade of care between 2015 and 2020: a modelling study

Sarah Blach et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the burden of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in 2020 and forecast the burden by 2030. Using literature review, Delphi process, and mathematical modelling, it estimated the global prevalence of viraemic HCV infection to be 0.7% in 2020, corresponding to 56.8 million infections. The findings suggest that the current efforts are not on track to achieve the global elimination targets by 2030.

Hepatic fibrosis changes in patients with chronic hepatitis C infection who respond to direct-acting antivirals

Khalid Alswat et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the impact of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) on fibrosis in hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment responders. The results showed a significant improvement in fibrosis after DAAs treatment, supporting the concept of post-treatment fibrosis regression.

Summary: In diabetic chronic hepatitis C virus (CHC) patients, treatment with generic sofosbuvir and daclatasvir (SOF/DCV) can improve glycemic state and reduce insulin resistance, but it may lead to a global worsening of the lipid profile.

Summary: The meta-analysis showed that antiviral therapy for HCV is associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. Individuals with sustained virological response (SVR) have a lower risk of CVD events compared to those without SVR.

Anthropometric parameters and liver histology influence lipid metabolic changes in HCV chronic hepatitis on direct-acting antiviral treatment

Domenico Iossa et al.

Summary: In patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) treated with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs), eradication of HCV leads to a pro-atherogenic lipid pattern. Changes in lipid metabolism depend on anthropometric parameters and liver histology. However, there is no significant increase in cardiovascular risk indexes in the short-term.

A Review on Extrahepatic Manifestations of Chronic Hepatitis C Virus Infection and the Impact of Direct-Acting Antiviral Therapy

Cesare Mazzaro et al.

Summary: Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is often associated with extrahepatic manifestations such as cryoglobulinemia, lymphomas, and cardiovascular disease. Direct-acting antiviral agents (DAA) therapy can significantly reduce the risk of these extrahepatic manifestations, improving patients' quality of life and survival.

Impact of DAA Treatment on Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Chronic HCV Infection: An Update

Summary: HCV infection is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events, potentially through mechanisms involving atherosclerosis. Treatment with direct acting antiviral agents (DAAs) not only improves liver-related outcomes, but also benefits extra-hepatic manifestations of chronic HCV infection.

Interplay between Heart Disease and Metabolic Steatosis: A Contemporary Perspective

Mohammad Said Ramadan et al.

Summary: The liver-heart axis is a field of growing interest due to increasing evidence of complex bidirectional interplay between the two organs. NAFLD has a significant association with a wide spectrum of structural and functional cardiac diseases, while the impact of cardiac disease on NAFLD is not well studied. Further investigation into the heart-liver relationship is warranted due to the global health and economic burden posed by both diseases.
