Incidence and Risk Factors for Complications and Mortality After Vertebroplasty or Kyphoplasty in the Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fracture-Analysis of 1,932 Cases From the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement

Ho-Joong Kim et al.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study investigated the incidence and risk factors for complications after vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. The major complication and mortality rates were 4.9% and 2.1% respectively, higher than previous reports. Increased creatinine and ASA 4 were independently associated with mortality after vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty.

Inverse relation of body weight with short-term and long-term mortality following hip fracture surgery: a meta-analysis

Tzu- Yang et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis of previous studies and found a negative relationship between body weight and long-term and short-term mortality after hip fracture surgery in older adults. The group with obesity had lower mortality rates, while the underweight group had higher mortality rates.

The obesity paradox for mid- and long-term mortality in older cancer patients: a prospective multicenter cohort study

Claudia Martinez-Tapia et al.

Summary: The study found that only older obese women with cancer who had minimal weight loss before diagnosis had a lower risk of mortality compared to normal-weight counterparts. However, overweight and obese men did not have a lower mortality risk regardless of weight loss.

Malnutrition as predictor of poor outcome after total hip arthroplasty

Sandra Eminovic et al.

Summary: This study found that malnourished elderly patients undergoing THA had a higher rate of post-operative complications, were older, had lower BMI, and more comorbid conditions. This highlights the importance of pre-operative nutritional assessment in the elderly. Serum albumin and TLC are valuable clinical markers of PEM and post-operative outcome.

The CARDE-B Scoring System Predicts 30-Day Mortality After Revision Total Joint Arthroplasty

Micheal Raad et al.

Summary: The CARDE-B score is a simple system that predicts the risk of death within 30 days of a revision total joint arthroplasty, offering surgeons and patients a valuable and validated risk-stratification tool. The accuracy of the CARDE-B score in predicting 30-day mortality after revision TJA was higher than the commonly utilized ASA physical status classification and the mFI-5. The external validation of the CARDE-B score also showed acceptable goodness of fit.

The Obesity Paradox in Elderly Patients Undergoing Emergency Surgery: A Nationwide Analysis

Mohamad El Moheb et al.

Summary: The study found that overweight and obese elderly EGS patients had a lower risk of mortality, bleeding requiring transfusion, pneumonia, reintubation, stroke, and myocardial infarction in the postoperative period. Further research is needed to confirm and investigate this phenomenon known as the "obesity paradox."

The obesity paradox and orthopedic surgery

Matthew Hennrikus et al.

Summary: The study revealed that obesity increases the risk of developing acute kidney injury after orthopedic surgery, which in turn leads to longer hospital stays and higher two-year mortality. Paradoxically, obese patients had a decreased likelihood of two-year mortality.

The Association Between Sarcopenia and Postoperative Outcomes Among Older Adults With Hip Fracture: A Systematic Review

Ming-Hsiu Chiang et al.

Summary: Hip fracture is a serious clinical event with high morbidity and mortality. Sarcopenia, characterized by age-related loss of muscle mass and function, is prevalent in older adults with hip fracture and may impact postoperative recovery and mortality rates. Further well-organized studies with longer follow-up periods are needed to better understand the association between sarcopenia and outcomes in older adults with hip fracture.
