Arthroscopic repair of degenerative medial meniscus tears in patients aged over 45 years resulted in favorable clinical outcomes and low clinical failure rates at a minimum 2-year follow-up

Siyuan Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the clinical and radiological outcomes of arthroscopic repair for isolated medial degenerative meniscus tears in patients over 45 years old. The results showed that arthroscopic repair had good clinical outcomes with low clinical failure rates, although unhealed menisci were observed on MRI in approximately 41% of patients.

An individualized decision between physical therapy or surgery for patients with degenerative meniscal tears cannot be based on continuous treatment selection markers: a marker-by-treatment analysis of the ESCAPE study

Julia C. A. Noorduyn et al.

Summary: Purpose Marker-by-treatment analyses are a promising new method in internal medicine, but have not yet been applied to orthopaedics. This study introduced a novel approach in orthopaedic research to identify treatment selection markers that affect outcomes following meniscal surgery or physical therapy in patients with degenerative meniscal tears. Several potential treatment selection markers were identified, but no consistent markers were found across all follow-up times.

Effect of Physical Therapy vs Arthroscopic Partial Meniscectomy in People With Degenerative Meniscal Tears Five-Year Follow-up of the ESCAPE Randomized Clinical Trial

Julia C. A. Noorduyn et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the 5-year effectiveness of arthroscopic partial meniscectomy and exercise-based physical therapy for patients with degenerative meniscal tears. The results showed that physical therapy was noninferior to surgery in terms of patient-reported knee function. Therefore, physical therapy should be preferred over surgery for the treatment of degenerative meniscal tears.

The sleeper's sign is valid and suggestive of a medial sub-meniscal flap tear

Nicolas Lefevre et al.

Summary: The sleeper's sign is a new, valid, highly specific clinical sign for the diagnosis of a medial submeniscal flap tear. MRI was found to be more sensitive than the sleeper's sign in diagnosing medial submeniscal flap tears.
