Characteristics, risk factors, and outcomes associated with readmission in COVID-19 patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abolfazl Akbari et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the characteristics, risk factors, and outcomes associated with readmission in COVID-19 patients. The results showed that male sex, white race, comorbidities, and older age were associated with a higher risk of readmission among previously admitted COVID-19 patients. These factors can help clinicians and policy-makers predict, and conceivably reduce the risk of readmission in COVID-19 patients.

Kidney Injury in COVID-19: Epidemiology, Molecular Mechanisms and Potential Therapeutic Targets

J. Pedro Teixeira et al.

Summary: This article discusses the epidemiology of kidney disease in COVID-19 and its association with poor outcomes. It also presents emerging data on long-term renal impairment caused by COVID-19 and delves into the ongoing debate about whether AKI in COVID-19 is mediated by direct viral injury. Furthermore, it explores the molecular pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 infection and proposes novel therapeutic targets for COVID-19.

Marianna Meschiari et al.

Summary: This study compared the 28-day mortality rate among hospitalized COVID-19 patients during the first and second waves. The results showed a 36% reduction in 28-day mortality during the second wave, indicating improved survival for patients.

Efficacy of COVID-19 vaccine booster doses in older people

Camilla Mattiuzzi et al.

Summary: Based on the ongoing COVID-19 vaccination campaign in Italy, we found that COVID-19 vaccine booster doses significantly reduce the risk of infection, hospitalization, ICU admission, and death in older people. Booster doses provide greater protection compared to completing the initial vaccination cycle earlier.

Severe COVID-19: A multifaceted viral vasculopathy syndrome

Cynthia M. Magro et al.

Summary: This study reveals two distinct mechanisms of severe COVID-19 infection: microangiopathy of pulmonary capillaries with high viral load leading to endothelial cell death, and pseudovirions docking on ACE2+ endothelial cells in skin/subcutaneous fat and brain triggering complement pathway/coagulation cascade and cytokine storm. The data suggests potential therapies targeting circulating viral proteins or endothelial-induced response for a favorable outcome.

Case Fatality Rates for Patients with COVID-19 Requiring Invasive Mechanical Ventilation A Meta-analysis

Zheng Jie Lim et al.

Summary: The study indicates that the case fatality rate of COVID-19 patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation is around 45%, but varying reporting methods result in a wide range of fatality rates across studies. Fatality rates are higher in older patients and in early pandemic epicenters.

Chronic kidney disease is a key risk factor for severe COVID-19: a call to action by the ERA-EDTA

Alberto Ortiz et al.

Summary: Diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease have been traditionally considered risk factors for severe COVID-19, but recent studies have found that renal disease, especially dialysis, organ transplantation, and CKD, play a significant role in the mortality risk associated with COVID-19.

Comparing the clinical efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines: a systematic review and network meta-analysis

Victoria Rotshild et al.

Summary: New COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna showed the highest efficacy in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 in adults. There was no significant difference in the prevention of symptomatic disease among the elderly population. mRNA-1273 and Gam-COVID-Vac vaccines were associated with a higher probability of protection against severe COVID-19 compared to other vaccines.

Single-cell analysis of angiotensin-converting enzyme II expression in human kidneys and bladders reveals a potential route of 2019 novel coronavirus infection

Wei Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ACE2 gene expression in healthy kidneys and bladders, showing enriched expression in proximal tubule cells of the kidney and low but detectable expression in bladder epithelial cells. The findings provide bioinformatics evidence of the potential route of 2019-nCoV infection in the urinary system.

Summary: This study retrospectively assessed the use and effects of therapeutic regimens in hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the Campania Region. It found that no single drug class significantly modified the outcome, regardless of therapy beginning, during the pandemic, with an overall in-hospital mortality incidence lower than that of Northern Italy during the same period.

Summary: In France, the risk of COVID-19 hospitalization and mortality is associated with age, gender, social deprivation, and various chronic health conditions. Down syndrome, mental retardation, kidney transplantation, lung transplantation, end-stage renal disease, and active lung cancer show the strongest associations with COVID-19 risk.

Association of AKI-D with Urinary Findings and Baseline eGFR in Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients

Dipal M. Patel et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify risk factors associated with acute kidney injury (AKI) in COVID-19 patients. Higher baseline eGFR, obesity, Latino ethnicity, congestive heart failure, and diabetes with complications were found to increase the odds of developing AKI requiring dialysis or not. Female patients had a lower risk of in-hospital AKI. Abnormal findings in urinalysis, such as protein and blood, were also associated with AKI development.
