Gut microbiome and health: mechanistic insights

Willem M. de Vos et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in regulating host health and its deviations are linked with various diseases. Understanding the molecular aspects of the gut microbiota's influence on health can lead to the development of novel therapies.

High-sensitivity pattern discovery in large, paired multiomic datasets

Andrew R. Ghazi et al.

Summary: This article presents a novel hierarchical framework, HAllA (Hierarchical All-against-All association testing), for discovering structured associations between paired high-dimensional datasets. HAllA efficiently integrates hierarchical hypothesis testing with FDR correction to reveal significant relationships among continuous and/or categorical data.

Brief Report: HIV-1 Seroconversion Is Not Associated With Prolonged Rectal Mucosal Inflammation

Cherie S. Blair et al.

Summary: The study found that despite a surge in viral replication during acute infection, there is no prolonged effect of HIV-1 seroconversion on inflammatory cytokine levels in the rectal mucosa.

Multivariable association discovery in population-scale meta-omics studies

Himel Mallick et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a statistical model called MaAsLin 2 for multivariable associations in population-scale microbial community studies, which has been extensively validated. The authors highlight the importance and challenges of multivariable association analysis in microbiome research, and propose a new method to handle such complex data.

Signature changes in gut microbiome are associated with increased susceptibility to HIV-1 infection in MSM

Yue Chen et al.

Summary: The study suggests that changes in gut microbiome in MSM prior to HIV-1 infection in the early phase of the AIDS pandemic may be associated with increased inflammatory biomarkers in the blood and risk for developing AIDS.

HIV-Infected Individuals on ART With Impaired Immune Recovery Have Altered Plasma Metabolite Profiles

Sofia Nystrom et al.

Summary: In this study, plasma metabolomic profiles of people with HIV (PWH) on antiretroviral therapy were evaluated to identify metabolite alterations associated with immune recovery. Results showed downregulation of indole-3-propionic acid, upregulation of cysteine pathways, and perturbations in serine and glycine metabolism and bile acid biosynthesis in PWH. These findings provide insights into the interplay of metabolism and immune response in HIV infection and offer potential biomarker candidates for immune recovery in PWH on antiretroviral therapy.
