Mechanistic models for additive manufacturing of metallic components

H. L. Wei et al.

Summary: This article discusses the application of additive manufacturing (AM) in the manufacturing of metallic components, focusing on the factors that affect the microstructure, properties, and defects of components and the corresponding model predictions. The critical review of the application of transport phenomena models in AM studies is provided, and opportunities for future research are identified.

Metallurgy, mechanistic models and machine learning in metal printing

T. DebRoy et al.

Summary: Metal printing is widely used in key industries to produce complex parts that are difficult to manufacture conventionally, with metallurgy, mechanistic models, and machine learning driving its continued growth. Additive manufacturing allows for the printing of metallic parts with specific chemical compositions and properties, but the selection of alloys, printing processes, and variables results in a diverse range of microstructures, properties, and defects that impact the serviceability of printed parts.

TCAD-Augmented Machine Learning With and Without Domain Expertise

Harsaroop Dhillon et al.

Summary: This article demonstrates the cost-effectiveness of using TCAD to generate data for building machine learning models for semiconductor devices. By training machines with TCAD I-V data, effective Schottky metal work functions and ambient temperatures of experimental devices can be deduced. Both machine learning models with and without domain expertise showed reasonable prediction accuracy despite noise and variations in the experimental device.

A study on hot-working as alternative post-processing method for titanium aluminides built by laser powder bed fusion and electron beam melting

Irina Sizova et al.

Summary: Intermetallic Titanium Aluminides (TiAl) are designed for high-temperature lightweight applications, with powder-bed additive manufacturing (AM) processes allowing near-net-shape production. However, TiAl parts produced by AM still lack the structural integrity and mechanical properties of forged parts. This study explores the feasibility of combining AM with isothermal forming to replace HIP post-processing, showing that hot forming can convert the AM microstructure to a dense and refined state, offering an alternative process chain for high-performance TiAl components production.

Material-structure-performance integrated laser-metal additive manufacturing

Dongdong Gu et al.

Summary: The advancement of laser-metal additive manufacturing has enabled the printing of multimaterial/multifunctional designs to meet the increasing demand from industries such as aviation, aerospace, automobile manufacturing, and energy production. By integrating material-structure-performance, major improvements in performance and function can be achieved through the right materials printed in the right positions and unique structures printed for unique functions. This approach exemplifies the revolution of design and manufacturing strategies in additive manufacturing.
