Unconventional interlayer exchange coupling via chiral phonons in synthetic magnetic oxide heterostructures

Seung Gyo Jeong et al.

Summary: Chiral symmetry breaking of phonons plays a crucial role in emergent quantum phenomena due to its strong coupling to spin degree of freedom. In this study, a chiral phonon-mediated interlayer exchange interaction was reported in atomically controlled ferromagnetic metal-nonmagnetic insulator heterostructures, resulting in spin rotation and a spin spiral state. The existence of chiral phonons and their interplay with spins in magnetic materials were confirmed through the phonon Zeeman effect and atomic-scale heterostructure approach.

Strong Ferromagnetism Achieved via Breathing Lattices in Atomically Thin Cobaltites

Sisi Li et al.

Summary: A method has been reported to maintain strong ferromagnetism in insulating LaCoO3 layers down to the thickness of a single unit cell. The study found that the magnetic and electronic states of LCO are intimately linked to the structural parameters of adjacent SrCuO2 layers. This research demonstrates a strategy for creating ultrathin ferromagnetic oxides by exploiting atomic heterointerface engineering, confinement-driven structural transformation, and spin-lattice entanglement in strongly correlated materials.

Dimensional Control of Octahedral Tilt in SrRuO3 via Infinite-Layered Oxides

Shan Lin et al.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that manipulation of octahedral distortion at atomic level is an effective means to tune the ground states of functional oxides. This study proposes a new route to tune ferromagnetism in ultrathin SrRuO3 layers by oxygen coordination of adjacent SrCuO2 layers, altering octahedral distortion and spin state of Ru.

Strain-Induced Atomic-Scale Building Blocks for Ferromagnetism in Epitaxial LaCoO3

Sangmoon Yoon et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the ferromagnetism in LaCoO3 thin films does not directly arise from strain itself, but rather from the compressed structural units created within ferroelastically formed twin-wall domains. These compressed structural units exhibit magnetically active properties with a rocksalt-type high-spin/low-spin order. Understanding the ferroelastic nature of these ferromagnetic structural units is crucial for unraveling the intriguing ferromagnetic properties in LCO thin films.

Correlated oxide Dirac semimetal in the extreme quantum limit

Jong Mok Ok et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates an emerging topological band structure in correlated oxide SrNbO3 thin films induced by strain-induced symmetry modification, showing ultrahigh mobility, exceptionally small effective mass, and nonzero Berry phase of Dirac electrons. The strained SrNbO3 films exhibit extreme quantum limit and a sign of fractional occupation of Landau levels, indicating a giant mass enhancement. This symmetry-modified SrNbO3 represents a rare example of correlated oxide Dirac semimetals, where strong correlation of Dirac electrons leads to the realization of a novel correlated topological quantum material.
