Inorganic Ions Enhance the Number of Product Compounds through Heterogeneous Processing of Gaseous NO2 on an Aqueous Layer of Acetosyringone

Pan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of ionic strength, pH, and temperature on the reaction between methoxyphenols and NO2, which is important for the formation of secondary organic aerosols. The results show that the presence of nitrate and sulfate ions in aqueous aerosols greatly affects the reaction and composition of methoxyphenols. This suggests that inorganic ions play a crucial role in heterogeneous oxidation processes in aqueous aerosol particles.

Formation of organic sulfur compounds through SO2-initiated photochemistry of PAHs and dimethylsulfoxide at the air-water interface

Haoyu Jiang et al.

Summary: This study observes the rapid formation of abundant organic sulfur compounds (OS) in the presence of SO2, through light-induced heterogeneous reactions between typical PAHs and DMSO. Some of these OS are established precursors of secondary organic aerosols (SOA). The research provides new insights into the potential sources and formation pathways of OS occurring at the water surface.

Aqueous secondary organic aerosol formation from the direct photosensitized oxidation of vanillin in the absence and presence of ammonium nitrate

Beatrix Rosette Go Mabato et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the direct photosensitized oxidation of vanillin (VL) under simulated sunlight can lead to the formation of aqueous secondary organic aerosols (aqSOA), and ammonium nitrate plays a catalytic role in this process. The reaction produces oligomers, functionalized monomers, and oxygenated ring-opening products. Nitrate promotes functionalization and nitration. The study also reveals the effects of oxygen, pH, and reactant concentration on the reaction.

Oxidation of sulfur dioxide by nitrogen dioxide accelerated at the interface of deliquesced aerosol particles

Tengyu Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the rate of reaction between NO2 and SO2 in dense atmospheric particles is significantly higher than in dilute solutions, indicating that the surface of aerosol particles may be the driving force behind this rapid reaction kinetics. These results suggest that the oxidation of SO2 by NO2 at aerosol surfaces could be an important source of sulfate aerosols under polluted haze conditions.

Molecular characterization of organic aerosols in Taiyuan, China: Seasonal variation and source identification

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed PM2.5 samples collected in Taiyuan in 2018, revealing higher abundance of organosulfates in summer and aromatic amines/N-heterocycle aromatic hydrocarbons in winter. The molecular compositions were more saturated and oxidized in summer, and coal-burning pollutants may be transported by prevailing northwesterlies in winter.

Summary: The study reveals the significant impact of oxygen content on the total yields of VOCs during the photoinduced interfacial reaction of NOL, with O-1(2) playing a crucial role in VOC formation. The photoactivity of NOL is greatly enhanced in the presence of air compared to nitrogen, primarily due to the generation of O-1(2).

Photosensitized Degradation of DMSO Initiated by PAHs at the Air-Water Interface, as an Alternative Source of Organic Sulfur Compounds to the Atmosphere

Haoyu Jiang et al.

Summary: Research has shown that photochemical reactions of organic compounds at the water surface can lead to the formation of organic sulfur (OS) compounds, potentially contributing to new particle formation in the atmosphere. Experiments demonstrated the behavior of typical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) in aqueous solutions under irradiation, revealing a possible reaction mechanism.

Sulfate formation is dominated by manganese-catalyzed oxidation of SO2 on aerosol surfaces during haze events

Weigang Wang et al.

Summary: Sulfate aerosols are an important component of wintertime haze events in China, with their production mechanisms not well understood. Research suggests that transition metal-catalyzed oxidation of SO2 on aerosol surfaces could be the dominant sulfate formation pathway in Northern China.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of various cooking methods and oils on the formation of PAHs in rabbit meat samples. It was found that frying with vegetable oil resulted in higher fluorene content, while poaching had the lowest PAH levels. Benzo(a)pyrene was not detected in any of the samples, indicating a safe cooking strategy.

Summary: The study found that the processing of nitrogen oxides on fatty acids in urban grime and organic aerosol particles in the atmosphere can lead to the formation of HONO and other nitrogen-containing organic compounds. Under low humidity conditions, the uptake coefficient of NO2 on pure oleic acid decreases with increasing relative humidity.

Organosulfates in atmospheric aerosols in Shanghai, China: seasonal and interannual variability, origin, and formation mechanisms

Yao Wang et al.

Summary: Organosulfates (OSs) are important tracers for secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) and were comprehensively characterized in ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) samples collected in Shanghai in 2015-2016 and 2018-2019. The study found that while the concentration of organic aerosols (OAs) decreased in 2018-2019 compared to 2015-2016, the concentrations of quantified OSs remained similar, suggesting an increased contribution of SOAs to OAs in 2018-2019.
