Human-Health Impacts of Controlling Secondary Air Pollution Precursors

Havala O. T. Pye et al.

Summary: Exposure to ozone and fine particle air pollution can cause premature death. Reducing anthropogenic volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions is more effective in reducing air pollution-related cardiorespiratory mortality compared to equivalent reductions in sulfur oxides (SOx) or nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. Therefore, controlling VOC emissions could have significant benefits for human health.

One-pot solvent-free microwave-assisted aza-Michael addition reaction of acrylonitrile

Parineeta Das et al.

Summary: A novel and highly effective one-pot microwave-assisted aza-Michael addition reaction of acrylonitrile with various primary aliphatic and aromatic amines has been reported. The reaction was catalyzed by a cost-effective, highly efficient and eco-friendly catalyst, molecular sieve of 4 A(0) size, under solvent-free conditions. The study investigated the reaction timing and catalyst amount as controlling parameters and proposed a plausible mechanistic pathway for the formation of acrylonitrile adducts. The synthesized products were identified using spectroscopic techniques and DLS measurements, and the catalyst's significance and heterogeneity were confirmed through hot filtration and recycling tests.

Iron nanoparticles to recover a co-contaminated soil with Cr and PCBs

M. Gil-Diaz et al.

Summary: Little attention has been given to the development of remediation strategies for soils polluted with mixtures of pollution (metal(loid)s and organic compounds). This study evaluates the effectiveness of different types of commercial iron nanoparticles for the remediation of an industrial soil co-contaminated with Cr and PCBs. The results suggest that iron nanoparticles can significantly reduce the concentrations of Cr and PCBs in the soil, especially the nZVI-Pd showing better performance than nZVI.

Arsenic removal from iron-containing groundwater by delayed aeration in dual-media sand filters

Md Annaduzzaman et al.

Summary: The study found that introducing an anoxic storage step in groundwater treatment can improve arsenic removal efficiency. Although Fe2+ oxidation is relatively slow in the anoxic system, the removal efficiency of As(V) is better. Therefore, the anoxic storage system can effectively enhance the oxidation and removal efficiency of As(III).

Monitoring socio-climatic interactions to prioritise drinking water interventions in rural Africa

Andrew Armstrong et al.

Summary: Rainfall variability and socioeconomic shocks present a revenue risk for drinking water services in rural Africa. By examining the relationship between rainfall and water usage, patterns warning of threats to operational sustainability can be identified. Continuous monitoring of socio-climatic interactions can help reveal risk distributions and magnitudes, guiding policy action to protect rural water services.

Membrane-Confined Iron Oxychloride Nanocatalysts for Highly Efficient Heterogeneous Fenton Water Treatment

Shuo Zhang et al.

Summary: The study achieved the degradation of organic pollutants in complex water matrices by loading iron oxychloride catalysts into the pores of a ceramic ultrafiltration membrane. The membrane, with a pore size that excludes natural organic matter, selectively exposed smaller organics to hydroxyl radicals, effectively inhibiting the degradation of organic pollutants.
