Analysis of the evolution of urban nighttime light environment based on time series

Ming Liu et al.

Summary: Excessively bright nighttime light environment is an increasingly serious environmental problem. This study used continuous monitoring and data analysis for 5 years to explore the factors affecting the night light environment, including moon phase, atmospheric pollution, and cloudiness. The results showed an increasing trend in nighttime brightness in the study area over the past five years. Historical data can be used to predict future changes in the light environment and support urban lighting planning.

Spatial mismatches between nighttime light intensity and building morphology in Shanghai, China

Gang Xu et al.

Summary: China's rapid urbanization has led to the expansion of urban land and buildings, but it is unclear whether the physical expansion matches the social and economic activities and vitality of cities. Using Shanghai as an example, this study quantifies urban vitality using nighttime light data and analyzes the spatial correlation between vitality and building morphology. The findings reveal mismatched areas in Shanghai, such as old and resettlement communities with low nighttime light but high building density, and new urban development zones with high nighttime light but low building density. The study concludes that the deterioration of living environment in urban centers hinders local vitality, while infrastructure development in suburbs is crucial for stimulating urban vitality.

Intensity and ratios of light affecting perception of space, co-presence and surrounding context, a lab experiment

Mette Hvass et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of light intensity and ratios on perception of space atmosphere and surrounding context. Results showed that participants perceived the atmosphere in low-luminance environments as relaxed and private, and lighting was considered more harmonious and less glaring when luminance ratios were low.

Assessment of Outdoor Lighting: Methods for Capturing the Pedestrian Experience in the Field

Johan Rahm et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of two LED lighting applications on pedestrian experience in a park in Malmo, Sweden, with results favoring the lighting application with greatest uniformity and horizontal illuminance. There was a significant difference in sign reading distance between the two age groups. The methods used in this study are feasible and useful for assessing lighting solutions for vulnerable groups.

Estimation and Analysis of the Nighttime PM2.5 Concentration Based on LJ1-01 Images: A Case Study in the Pearl River Delta Urban Agglomeration of China

Yanjun Wang et al.

Summary: This study establishes a correlation model between nighttime light radiance and ground PM2.5 concentration, and proposes a multiple linear regression model to estimate PM2.5 concentrations in the Pearl River Delta region. Results show a high estimation accuracy with a notable temporal and spatial heterogeneity of model accuracy. This research provides practical value and potential in nighttime ground PM2.5 concentration inversion.

Saving energy while maintaining the feeling of safety associated with urban street lighting

Rami Saad et al.

Summary: By using warmer lights and increasing light uniformity, energy savings of 30-50% can be achieved on street lighting. For medium-size cities with 200-400 K residents, energy savings on street lighting can reach 8-23 MWh per annum, equivalent to a small-to-medium-size power plant output. This study demonstrates that energy can be saved on street lighting while maintaining a reasonable level of safety.
