Surface-Enhanced Electronic Raman Scattering at Various Metal Surfaces

Ryuto Kamimura et al.

Summary: Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a highly sensitive technique used to obtain vibrational information at metal/dielectric interfaces. However, the origin of the spectral background in SERS has been a subject of debate. This study measured scattering spectra for various metal surfaces and conducted theoretical evaluations, revealing that electronic Raman scattering is responsible for the background continuum in SERS spectra.

Actively Tunable Fano Resonance in H-Like Metal-Graphene Hybrid Nanostructures

Yuan Wan et al.

Summary: This paper theoretically studies the actively tunable Fano resonance in H-like metal-graphene hybrid nanostructures at visible and near-infrared wavelengths. The results show that the addition of graphene leads to a blue shift in the absorption spectrum and the wavelength and intensity can be manipulated by adjusting the structure parameters, host materials, and graphene Fermi energy levels.

Individual Split Au Square Nanorings for Surface-Enhanced Raman and Hyper-Raman Scattering

RuXin Zhang et al.

Summary: Individual split Au square nanorings were proposed as novel substrates for both surface-enhanced Raman and hyper-Raman scattering, with maximum SEHRS and SERS enhancement factors reaching 1.22 x 10(12) and 10(8) respectively. The corresponding SERS-based refractive index sensitivity factors at visible and near-infrared wavelengths were as high as 258 nm/RIU and 893 nm/RIU. The proposed structures show great promise for RI sensing substrates and have strong potential applications in nanosensing and enhanced Raman scattering.

Nanoscale Gallium Phosphide Epilayers on Sapphire for Low-Loss Visible Nanophotonics

Vladimir V. Fedorov et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the formation of high-quality nanoscale epitaxial layers of gallium phosphide directly on transparent sapphire wafers. The two-step growth technique using a domain matching epitaxy mechanism allows for precise control of material properties and layer thickness. The (111)-oriented epitaxial layers of gallium phosphide on high-optical-contrast sapphire wafers are achieved through direct molecular beam epitaxial growth without the need for postgrowth layer transfer techniques.

Plasmonic refractive index sensor based on the combination of rectangular and circular resonators including baffles

Siti Zubaidah binti Haji Jumat et al.

Summary: The study numerically designed a plasmonic refractive index sensor with high sensitivity and tunable optical feature by adding silver baffles, which significantly increased the sensor's sensitivity and figure of merit. The proposed sensor can achieve high precision detection within the refractive index increment range of 0.01. Adding silver baffles in the plasmonic sensor system generated an additional gap plasmon resonance mode that enhanced the sensitivity and figure of merit.

Directly grown crystalline gallium phosphide on sapphire for nonlinear all-dielectric nanophotonics

D. Khmelevskaia et al.

Summary: Efficient second harmonic generation in nanophotonic designs demands materials with large values of the quadratic nonlinear susceptibility, low dissipative losses, and high refractive index. Gallium phosphide (GaP) is one of the best materials meeting all these parameters. Developing a method to fabricate high-quality crystalline GaP metasurfaces demonstrates pronounced linear and nonlinear optical properties.

Anapole-Assisted Absorption Engineering in Arrays of Coupled Amorphous Gallium Phosphide Nanodisks

Ludwig Huettenhofer et al.

Summary: The study investigates the coupling mechanisms in arrays of amorphous GaP nanodisks supporting anapole excitations, revealing that absorption enhancement of up to 300% can be achieved by adjusting the array periodicities to overlap with the anapole excitation of a single particle. Analyzing coupling interactions in one- and two-dimensional arrays allows for discrimination between parallel and perpendicular interactions to the polarization axis, showing an enhancement of electric and toroidal dipoles under variation of the interparticle spacing. These findings provide insight into tailored light absorption in coupled anapole resonators and offer important design guidelines for energy conversion applications.

Electromagnetic field emitted by core-shell semiconductor nanowires driven by an alternating current

Miguel Urbaneja Torres et al.

Summary: In tubular nanowires with a polygonal cross section, external magnetic fields can lead to the separation of lowest energy states into corner and side-localized states. The magnetic field causes electrons to be pushed sideways, affecting the current density. Due to the localization properties, the radiated electromagnetic field from nanowires can have a complex distribution determined by the internal geometry.
