Tuning length scale effect of hardness in Ag/Nb/Cu/Nb multilayers by Nb amorphous interlayer

M. Z. Wei et al.

Summary: The hardness of Ag/Nb/Cu/Nb multilayers with Nb amorphous interlayer was found to be significantly improved compared to Ag/Cu multilayers. The length scale effect of strengthening became broader in the range of 5-60 nm. The addition of Nb amorphous interlayer contributed to the enhancement by introducing modulus mismatch and crystal/amorphous interfaces (CAIs) that increased resistance to dislocation transmission and inhibited deformation of the amorphous layer.

Structure, mechanical properties and tribological behavior of sp2-C:Ti/sp3-C:Ti multilayer films deposited by magnetron sputtering

Dongguang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, nano-multilayer films (MFs) containing sequential sp(3)-C:Ti/sp(2)-C:Ti were deposited on Ti6Al4V and c-Si substrates to improve the adhesive strength and fatigue resistance of amorphous carbon (a-C) films. The results showed that these MFs exhibited excellent mechanical properties and scratch behavior, with lower coefficient of friction and wear rate in both humid air and FBS solution.

Effects of modulation layer thickness on fracture toughness of a TiN/AlN-Ni multilayer film

Chao Zhou et al.

Summary: A series of TiN/AlN-Ni multilayer films with different modulation layer thicknesses were prepared by magnetron sputtering. Their microstructures and mechanical properties were characterized. The hardness and elastic modulus of the multilayers were greatly improved by introducing an AlN-Ni modulation layer. The fracture toughness reached its maximum at a modulation-layer thickness of 2.4 nm, while further increasing the thickness resulted in a decrease in hardness and toughness.

Atomic-scale insight into mechanical properties and deformation behavior of crystalline/amorphous dual-phase high entropy alloys

R. N. Li et al.

Summary: The effects of amorphous phase thickness, crystal grain size, and element content on the deformation mechanism and mechanical properties of the crystalline/amorphous dual-phase high entropy alloys (HEAs) were investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. The results show that the plastic deformation mode of the HEA changes from dislocation slip in the crystalline phase to the movement of shear band dominated by the amorphous phase with an increase in amorphous phase thickness or a decrease in grain size. Additionally, changing the component content of the crystalline phase can improve the strength and plasticity of the HEA.

Hydrodesulfurization of Dibenzothiophene over Ni-Mo-W Sulfide Catalysts Supported on Sol-Gel Al2O3-CeO2

Rufino M. Navarro Yerga et al.

Summary: New Ni-Mo-Mo hydrodesulfurization (HDS) catalysts supported by Al2O3-CeO2 materials were synthesized to achieve low sulfur content in gas oil. The addition of CeO2 loading in the support significantly improved the activity and hydrogenation function of the catalyst, leading to efficient conversion of dibenzothiophene (DBT).

Influence of W content on microstructure and surface morphology of hard Ni-W films fabricated by magnetron co-sputtering

Amir R. Esmaeili et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of W content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ni-W thin films, demonstrating that hardness is primarily determined by the W content, with an increase in hardness as W content increases. For samples with W content between 40 and 55 at.%, the sensitivity of hardness to W content decreases, possibly due to the presence of an amorphous phase. In samples with W content exceeding 55 at.%, the hardness increase is attributed to solid solution strengthening and electronic interaction between two transition metals, resulting in a doubling of the hardening effect compared to W content below 40 at.%.
