Influence of 17-4 PH stainless steel powder recycling on properties of SLM additive manufactured parts

Sara Giganto et al.

Summary: Metal additive manufacturing (AM) processes are rapidly developing, but the quality of manufactured parts remains a major concern. This study evaluated the properties of 17-4 PH stainless steel parts printed from powder in different recycling states. The results showed that powder recycling slightly decreased surface roughness and pore size, decreased internal porosity, increased gamma-phase content, and led to increased ductility and decreased hardness of the samples. It can be concluded that the recycling process is suitable for ensuring the economic and environmental viability of the SLM manufacturing process without adversely affecting the properties of the parts.

Evolution of residual stress behavior in selective laser melting (SLM) of 316L stainless steel through preheating and in-situ re-scanning techniques

Saad Waqar et al.

Summary: The premature fractures, cracks, distortions, and delamination in selective laser melting manufactured components are among the most prominent challenges. Residual stresses are the main causes of these issues. Post processing techniques are commonly used to reduce these stresses, but they increase production time and costs. Therefore, developing in-process techniques to reduce residual stresses is crucial for large-scale production of metallic components.

Effect of solution annealing on microstructures and corrosion behavior of wire and arc additive manufactured AZ91 magnesium alloy in sodium chloride solution

Zhen Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of solution annealing on the microstructures and corrosion behavior of wire and arc additive manufactured AZ91 magnesium alloy. The results showed that solution annealing coarsened the grain, eliminated non-basal grain orientation, and dissolved the Mg17Al12 phase. Additionally, solution annealing improved the corrosion resistance of the alloy.

Pitting behavior of 316L stainless steel in direct culture with mesenchymal stem cells

Jing Wu et al.

Summary: Corrosion is a major reason for the failure of metallic implants. The presence of bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) can decrease the stability of 316 L stainless steels (316 L SS), leading to preferential pitting corrosion initiation at the peripheries of BMSCs.

On the effect of rapid annealing on the microstructure and mechanical behavior of additively manufactured stainless steel by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

Mohammad Reza Jandaghi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that short-term heat treatment can effectively reduce residual stress in stainless steel 316L products and improve the stability of the microstructure. Additionally, rapid annealing longer than 30 seconds leads to lattice structure evolution and grain boundary migration, resulting in a decrease in material mechanical properties.

Electrochemical noise comparative study of pitting corrosion of 316L stainless steel fabricated by selective laser melting and wrought

Zhen Zhang et al.

Summary: The study compared the pitting corrosion behavior of SLM 316L SS and wrought 316L SS, finding that the SLM samples had higher pitting potentials. Different types of pits initiated by non-metallic inclusions, gas pores, and lack-of-fusion pores were identified using the electrochemical noise technique. Analysis showed that the higher pitting resistance of SLM 316L was due to its poorer ability of pit growth, and the potential application of using EN technique to evaluate LOF pores in SLM parts was discussed.

Dongdong Dong et al.

Summary: In this study, selective laser melting technology was used to manufacture CX stainless steel samples, and the microstructure, phase distribution, crystallographic orientation, and mechanical properties were investigated. The optimal linear energy density led to CX stainless steel samples with the best surface roughness and relative density, predominantly composed of fine martensite structures. Dislocation strengthening was found to be the main mechanism influencing the strength of the samples.

The effect of post-processing heat treatment on the microstructure, residual stress and mechanical properties of selective laser melted 316L stainless steel

Qi Chao et al.

Summary: Additively manufactured 316L austenitic stainless steel was subjected to various heat treatments to study the evolution of residual stress, microstructure, and mechanical properties. Significant compressive residual stress was revealed in the as-built condition, with stress relief achieved at different temperatures. Microstructural changes, such as recrystallization, coarsening of nano-inclusions, and precipitation of embrittling phases, were observed during the heat treatment process, impacting the material's ductility and strength. The study established important relationships between heat treatment, properties, and microstructural changes for the structural application of SLM 316L.
