Quantifying early-stage precipitation strengthening of Al-Mg-Zn(-Cu) alloy by using particle size distribution

Yingxin Geng et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the early stage precipitation strengthening behavior of a newly developed Al-Mg-Zn alloy by particle size distribution. The results show that the rapid strengthening response strongly depends on the number density and constitution of Guinier-Preston zones, and is increased by the addition of Cu. The strength of the alloy is quantified by evaluating different types of precipitates.

The effect of Ag on the tensile strength and fracture toughness of novel Al-Mg-Zn alloys

Haoran Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effect of trace addition of Ag on the microstructure, tensile strength, and fracture toughness of novel Al-Mg-Zn alloys. The addition of Ag improves the age hardening response and refines the density and size of the matrix precipitates (MPts), but weakens their ability to obstruct dislocation motion, leading to no improvement in the strength of the alloys. The addition of Ag also has different effects on fracture toughness depending on the concentration, with 0.2 wt% Ag improving it and 0.4 wt% and 0.6 wt% Ag decreasing it.

Solute cluster evolution during deformation and high strain hardening capability in naturally aged Al-Zn-Mg alloy

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of solute clusters on the mechanical properties of a commercial Al-Zn-Mg alloy during natural aging (NA). It is found that dense solute clusters enhance the yield strength and strain hardening ability of the alloy without affecting dislocation density evolution. Solute clusters undergo a dissolution-to-coarsening transition during deformation, potentially contributing to the high strain hardening rate observed.

Giant hardening response in AlMgZn(Cu) alloys

Summary: This study presents a thermomechanical processing concept that utilizes the full industrial application potential of AlMgZn(Cu) alloys. The beneficial linkage of alloy design and processing achieves a balance between high mechanical strength and good formability while addressing the need for economically feasible processing times. The alloys investigated show high formability and a rapid hardening response, with significant enhancement by the addition of Cu, after short pre-aging treatments and final heat treatments.

Precipitation hardening and intergranular corrosion behavior of novel Al-Mg-Zn(-Cu) alloys

Yanlin Pan et al.

Summary: The research found that by increasing the zinc and copper content in Al-Mg-Zn(-Cu) alloys, the strength and corrosion resistance of the alloy can be improved. The density and lattice spacing of intragranular precipitates increase while precipitate sizes decrease, resulting in increased strength. Additionally, enhancing the intergranular corrosion resistance can be achieved by reducing the potential between grain boundary precipitates and the Al matrix.

Summary: This study shows that by optimizing the zinc content and two-step aging treatment process, the age-hardening response of Al-Mg-Zn alloys can be enhanced and accelerated. Pre-aging treatment results in a large number of fine and dispersive T precipitates, while further optimization of the two-stage aging treatment for the Al-5.1Mg-3.0Zn alloy increases the peak-aged yield strength by 21.1% compared to the single-step aging process.
