Dynamics of cumulative advantage and threats to equity in open science: a scoping review

Tony Ross-Hellauer et al.

Summary: Open Science has the potential to make scientific endeavors more inclusive, participatory, understandable, accessible, and reusable. However, there are significant disparities in the capacity to engage in open processes, which may perpetuate conditions of 'cumulative advantage'. Existing research highlights threats to equity in all aspects of Open Science, including Open Access, Open Data, Open Methods, Open Evaluation, Citizen Science, and their interactions with society, industry, and policy. Key threats include stratification in publishing, a widening digital divide, diminishing qualitative methodologies, bias and exclusion in evaluation, and asymmetries in relationships with industry and the public.

When Gender Matters in Scientific Communication: The Role of Generic Language

Jasmine M. DeJesus et al.

Summary: Research has shown that there are gender differences in self-presentation and self-promotion, especially in scientific publications. Women in lead author positions are less likely to use generic language in psychology articles, which in turn receive fewer citations compared to articles with more generic language, authored by men. This subtle gender difference in self-presentation could have implications for how scientific findings are interpreted and cited, potentially affecting career advancement for both women and men.

Peer review and gender bias: A study on 145 scholarly journals

Flaminio Squazzoni et al.

Summary: This study analyzed gender bias in 145 journals and found that manuscripts written by women as solo authors or coauthored by women were treated more favorably by referees and editors. The results suggest that peer review and editorial processes do not penalize manuscripts by women, and increasing gender diversity in editorial teams and referee pools could help encourage more women to participate.

Flaminio Squazzoni et al.

Summary: During the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, women submitted proportionally fewer scholarly manuscripts than men, especially among younger cohorts of female academics. However, women took on a greater service responsibility for journals in terms of peer-review activities, except in the field of health & medicine where men had a more prominent role due to the impact of COVID-19 research.

'Being good isn't good enough': gender discrimination in Italian academia

Marianna Filandri et al.

Summary: The study reveals a significant gender gap in professors' career advancement in the Italian university system, which cannot be explained by differences in scientific productivity between genders. Even after controlling for available resources and the percentage of female full professors, structural gender bias persists.
