Climate Change Impacts on Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems

Steven J. Bograd et al.

Summary: Eastern boundary upwelling systems (EBUSs) play a crucial role in global ocean productivity and ecosystem services. This paper reviews the impact of climate change on EBUSs, including changes in physics, biogeochemistry, and ecology, and presents observations and projections for the future. While there are commonalities in historical and projected change, such as intensification of upwelling in poleward regions, mitigated warming in near-coastal regions, and increased water-column stratification, there are still uncertainties regarding how these changes will affect productivity and ecosystem structure. Further research is needed to address these uncertainties and better understand and adapt to climate-driven changes in EBUSs.

Mesoscale Variability in the Boundaries of the Oxygen Minimum Zone in the Eastern South Pacific: Influence of Intrathermocline Eddies

P. A. Auger et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that in the eastern South Pacific oxygen minimum zone (OMZ), the influence of anticyclonic intrathermocline eddies (ITEs) significantly affects the vertical OMZ boundaries and thickness. ITEs leave lens-shaped signatures on vertical distributions and have a major impact on oxycline variability in coastal and mid-latitude regions.

The 2019 Benguela Nino

Rodrigue Anicet Imbol Koungue et al.

Summary: High interannual sea surface temperature anomalies of more than 2 degrees C were recorded along the coasts of Angola and Namibia between October 2019 and January 2020, which has been classified as a Benguela Nino. This extreme coastal warm event was generated by a combination of local and remote forcing, and coastal trapped waves were observed along the African coast.

System controls of coastal and open ocean oxygen depletion

Grant C. Pitcher et al.

Summary: The Anthropocene epoch has seen a decline in oxygen concentrations and expansion of oxygen-depleted environments due to human activities. Case studies highlight the complexity of factors influencing oxygen concentrations, requiring system-specific models for understanding and predicting future changes.
