Numerical modelling of wave transformation and runup over rough fringing reefs using VARANS equations

Yu Yao et al.

Summary: In this study, a 3D numerical model based on a numerical wave tank was developed to investigate the interaction between waves and coral reef profiles. The model was validated through laboratory experiments and used to analyze the impacts of forcing conditions, reef morphology, and reef roughness on wave transformation and runup. An empirical formula for predicting wave runup was derived from the numerical results. The study also examined the cross-reef variations of energy dissipation, wave spectrum, wave shape parameters, nonlinearity parameter, TKE, and its dissipation rate for both smooth and rough reefs.

On the runup parameterisation for reef-lined coasts

Gemma L. Franklin et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop runup parameterisations for reef-lined coasts using a numerical model and machine learning approach. Analysis suggests that incorporating reef geometry factors can improve the prediction of coastal flooding vulnerability in reef environments. Further research efforts should focus on incorporating additional effects such as bed roughness and three-dimensional processes.

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics simulations of reef surf zone processes driven by plunging irregular waves

R. J. Lowe et al.

Summary: In this study, the mesh-free, Lagrangian particle-based numerical modelling approach Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) coupled with the mesh-based multi-layer nonhydrostatic wave-flow model SWASH was used to simulate the fine-scale hydrodynamic processes driven by irregular wave transformation over a fringing reef profile. Results showed that the SPH model was able to accurately reproduce complex free surface deformations during plunging breaking, wave spectral evolution across the reef flat, mean water levels and currents, and wave runup at the shoreline.

Uncertainty of wave runup prediction on coral reef-fringed coasts using SWASH model

Ye Liu et al.

Summary: The study shows that predicting wave runup on reef-fringed coasts is mainly affected by infragravity swash variability. Prior knowledge of the incident wave group structure can help reduce this uncertainty. Increasing the number of spectral components can decrease the uncertainty in wave runup height.

Wave Modulation of Flows on Open and Closed Reefs

M. Lindhart et al.

Summary: This study explores a framework for classifying reefs as open or closed based on their dynamics, using observations, numerical models, and theory. By observing reefs in American Samoa, the study shows that reefs exhibit different dynamic regimes under tidal and wave forcing, transitioning between open and closed behavior over a tidal cycle. The results suggest that classifying reefs based on their dynamics, rather than geometry, is a more meaningful approach to predicting their dynamical response to wave and tidal forcing.

A Numerical Study of Wave-Driven Mean Flows and Setup Dynamics at a Coral Reef-Lagoon System

Summary: The study on the reef-lagoon system at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia, using the SWASH model, revealed that wave forces primarily drive onshore flows near the reef crest, while bottom stress plays a significant role in wave setup inside the lagoon.

Uncertainty in runup predictions on natural beaches using XBeach nonhydrostatic

J. Rutten et al.

Summary: The study shows that intrinsic uncertainty has a varying impact on wave runup height at different beaches, with low-frequency swash being more sensitive to this uncertainty. Additional simulations reveal that intrinsic uncertainty produces more variability in low-frequency swash than the two most important model parameters.
