Light availability regulated by particulate organic matter affects coral assemblages on a turbid fringing reef

Yong Luo et al.

Summary: Recent research suggests that underwater light availability plays a crucial role in the growth and distribution of reef-building corals exposed to elevated suspended solids. This study investigated the variations in light availability, coral assemblages, and suspended solids concentrations and composition on the Luhuitou fringing reef in Sanya, China. The results showed that light availability is related to the distribution and growth of different coral species, and that the organic fraction of suspended solids plays a significant role in light attenuation.

High summer temperatures amplify functional differences between coral- and algae-dominated reef communities

Florian Roth et al.

Summary: The study found that in the central Red Sea, coral-dominated communities exhibited 30% lower net productivity and 10 times higher calcification than algae-dominated communities. Estimated activation energies indicated a higher thermal sensitivity of coral-dominated communities. These results suggest pronounced changes in community functioning associated with coral-algal phase shifts.

Heterotrophic bacterioplankton responses in coral- and algae-dominated Red Sea reefs show they might benefit from future regime shift

Summary: This study investigated the impact of DOM cycling on heterotrophic bacterioplankton in coral reefs. It found that DOC concentrations were higher in warmer months, with algal-DOM showing higher values, potentially leading to increased bacterial biomass.

Effect of Ocean Acidification on Bacterial Metabolic Activity and Community Composition in Oligotrophic Oceans, Inferred From Short-Term Bioassays

Caiqin Hu et al.

Summary: Ocean acidification (OA) caused by increasing anthropogenic CO2 emissions affects bacterial metabolic activity and community composition in the ocean, leading to decreased bacterial production and more DOC being transferred to CO2. Under high-pCO(2) conditions, there is an increase in small-sized bacteria and higher bacterial species diversity.
