Cardiac sympathetic-vagal activity initiates a functional brain-body response to emotional arousal

Diego Candia-Rivera et al.

Summary: The century-long debate on bodily states and emotions continues, with this study investigating the brain-heart interplay during emotional experiences. Using a computational model, the researchers found that sympathetic-vagal activity plays a leading and causal role in initiating the emotional response, and the subsequent dynamic interplay between the central and autonomic nervous systems sustains the processing of emotional arousal.

Global, regional, and national burden of 12 mental disorders in 204 countries and territories, 1990-2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Alize J. Ferrari et al.

Summary: The Global Burden of Diseases Study in 2019 showed that mental disorders remained among the top ten leading causes of burden worldwide, with no reduction in burden since 1990. The majority of the burden in disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) came from years lived with disability (YLDs).

Global prevalence and burden of depressive and anxiety disorders in 204 countries and territories in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic

Damian F. Santomauro et al.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the prevalence and burden of major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders globally in 2020. The findings showed that the pandemic led to increased prevalence of major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders, with females and younger age groups being more affected. The pandemic has created an increased urgency to strengthen mental health systems in most countries and mitigation strategies are needed to address the burden of these mental disorders.

A meta-analysis on heart rate variability biofeedback and depressive symptoms

Silvia F. M. Pizzoli et al.

Summary: The study found that heart rate variability biofeedback has a moderate effect in reducing depressive symptoms in adult patients. The results suggest that HRVB is effective in improving depressive symptoms in various psychophysiological conditions and that the publication year and the questionnaire used to assess symptoms can moderate the intervention effect.

Effects of Different Training Interventions on Heart Rate Variability and Cardiovascular Health and Risk Factors in Young and Middle-Aged Adults: A Systematic Review

Bernhard Graessler et al.

Summary: This systematic review examined the effects of different physical training modalities on resting HRV, cardiovascular health, and risk factors in young and middle-aged, healthy adults. The results showed improvements in linear and non-linear HRV parameters and cardiovascular health and risk factors for all types of interventions. The study also identified methodological and reporting deficits in the quality assessment of eligible studies.

The Influence of Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback on Cardiac Regulation and Functional Brain Connectivity

Andy Schumann et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of an 8-week HRV-biofeedback intervention on functional brain connectivity in healthy subjects. The results showed that increased heart rate variability induced by HRV-biofeedback was accompanied by changes in functional brain connectivity during resting state, particularly in the VMPFC and other brain regions such as the insula, amygdala, and prefrontal regions. The findings suggest that HRV biofeedback can enhance brain connectivity and may have implications for stress and emotion regulation.
