Hybridization, missing wild ancestors and the domestication of cultivated diploid bananas

Julie Sardos et al.

Summary: Hybridization and introgressions play important roles in plant evolution, particularly in the domestication of clonal crops like banana. Through genome-wide SNP analysis of banana cultivars and wild samples, we found high levels of admixture in many cultivated varieties and confirmed the existence of unknown wild ancestors with unequal contributions. In New Guinea, cultivated accessions had higher diversity compared to their direct wild ancestor, indicating a recovery from a bottleneck. Introgressions, balancing selection, and positive selection were identified as important mechanisms for banana domestication. These findings provide new insights into the divergence of M. acuminata subspecies and its impact on banana domestication, and have implications for conservation, collection, and breeding.

Unravelling the complex story of intergenomic recombination in ABB allotriploid bananas

Alberto Cenci et al.

Summary: This study uncovered recurrent homologous exchanges in ABB bananas, revealing at least nine founding events before clonal diversification. Based on observations, different routes to the formation of ABB cultivars were suggested, including primary AB hybrids, shared homologous exchanges, and an excess contribution of the B genome. The results clarify the classification of ABB cultivars and may lead to a revision of the subgroup's classification.

Liftoff: accurate mapping of gene annotations

Alaina Shumate et al.

Summary: Advancements in DNA sequencing and computational methods have led to a significant increase in high-quality genome assemblies for many species. To annotate gene features in these genomes, a common strategy is to map genes from a previously annotated reference genome to new or improved assemblies. The tool Liftoff can accurately map genes between the same or closely related species, ensuring high sequence identity and preserving gene structure.
