Arcuate Nucleus-Dependent Regulation of Metabolism-Pathways to Obesity and Diabetes Mellitus

Alexander Jais et al.

Summary: The central nervous system plays a crucial role in maintaining metabolic homeostasis and regulating various physiological functions through the ARC. Energy state-sensing neurons in the ARC are master regulators that control feeding, glucose homeostasis, and other physiological responses based on the organism's energy status.

Prolactin-Induced Adaptation in Glucose Homeostasis in Mouse Pregnancy Is Mediated by the Pancreas and Not in the Forebrain

Zin Khant Aung et al.

Summary: Adaptive changes in glucose regulation during pregnancy involve proliferation of insulin-secreting beta-cells in the pancreas and increased sensitivity to glucose-stimulated insulin secretion. Maternal prolactin/placental lactogen concentrations play a role in these changes, with evidence suggesting the pancreas as the direct target of these actions.

Adverse body composition and lipid parameters in patients with prolactinoma: a case-control study

Anna Sophia Posawetz et al.

Summary: This study compared body composition, glucose, and lipid metabolism parameters between untreated prolactinoma patients and controls, as well as changes after cabergoline therapy initiation. Prolactinoma patients had higher BMI and fat mass, elevated LDL, and decreased HDL levels. Cabergoline treatment significantly reduced total and LDL cholesterol levels, particularly in men.

Circulating prolactin level is increased in metabolically healthy obesity

Jia Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that obese individuals with metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) had higher levels of prolactin (PRL) and better metabolic profiles compared to those with metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUHO). Additionally, severe MUHO group had significantly reduced PRL levels. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that PRL was an independent predictor of MHO.

Impact of primary medical or surgical therapy on prolactinoma patients' BMI and metabolic profile over the long-term

Lukas Andereggen et al.

Summary: In this comparative study on patients with prolactinoma, both transsphenoidal surgery (TSS) and dopamine agonists (DAs) were effective in controlling hyperprolactinemia and hypogonadism in the majority of patients over the long-term. While both treatment modalities led to improvements in BMI and fasting glucose levels, changes in the lipid profile were minimal and independent of the treatment used. The primary predictor for long-term obesity was found to be increased BMI at baseline, rather than the choice of treatment strategy.
