SERENA: Particle Instrument Suite for Determining the Sun-Mercury Interaction from BepiColombo

Summary: The ESA-JAXA BepiColombo mission to Mercury involves two spacecraft making simultaneous measurements to study magnetospheric and exospheric particle dynamics at Mercury and their interactions with various cosmic elements. The particle instrument suite SERENA on board the BepiColombo Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) consists of four sensors and is the only instrument for ion and neutral particle detection on the MPO. The scientific goals, detailed units, features, calibration results, and operational activities of SERENA are described in this study.

Pick-Up Ion Cyclotron Waves Around Mercury

Summary: Mercury's plasma environment is influenced by the interaction of the solar wind with its intrinsic magnetic field and tenuous exosphere, resulting in the generation of ion cyclotron waves. The characteristics and differences of proton cyclotron waves in the solar wind and magnetosheath were evaluated by analyzing 4 years of MESSENGER magnetometer data. The study suggests that ion cyclotron waves in these two regions might originate from different excitation mechanisms.

The BepiColombo Planetary Magnetometer MPO-MAG: What Can We Learn from the Hermean Magnetic Field?

Summary: The paper introduces the MPO-MAG magnetometer instrument on-board the Mercury Planetary Orbiter, including its design, calibration, and scientific goals. The instrument will map the planetary magnetic field at Mercury to determine the dynamo generated field and constrain the secular variation.
