Increased accuracy of genomic predictions for growth under chronic thermal stress in rainbow trout by prioritizing variants from GWAS using imputed sequence data

Grazyella M. Yoshida et al.

Summary: Utilizing imputation of genotypes and whole-genome sequencing data, this study investigated the genetic architecture of growth traits in rainbow trout under chronic heat stress, revealing the polygenic nature of these traits. GWAS identified important functional candidate genes associated with growth traits, and using preselected SNPs based on GWAS hits improved the accuracy of genomic prediction. The use of WGS slightly increased prediction accuracy, supporting the evidence of the polygenic nature of growth traits measured under heat stress.

Jose Teodoro Paiva et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of different Legendre polynomial orders to estimate genetic parameters for milk production and fatty acid traits in Walloon Holstein cows. The results showed that third-order Legendre polynomials seemed to be the most parsimonious and sufficient model for describing milk production and fatty acid traits in Walloon Holstein cows.

An imputed whole-genome sequence-based GWAS approach pinpoints causal mutations for complex traits in a specific swine population

Guorong Yan et al.

Summary: Sequencing-based GWAS have proven useful in identifying causal associations between genetic variants and traits. In this study, genotype imputation was used to increase SNP density in a large-scale swine F-2 population, revealing key nucleotides influencing traits and proposing two candidate genes related to meat traits. The study also illustrated various scenarios researchers may encounter in imputation-based GWAS.

An Appropriate Genetic Approach for Improving Reproductive Traits in Crossbred Thai-Holstein Cattle under Heat Stress Conditions

Akhmad Fathoni et al.

Summary: Thailand, a tropical country affected by global climate change, faces heat stress in livestock due to high temperatures and humidity. Crossbred dairy cattle in Thailand are particularly affected by extreme climate change. Genetic evaluations have been conducted for reproductive traits, with low heritability due to significant environmental influences. The use of genomic selection (GS) is the most promising technique, providing accurate results and high genetic gain. Single-step genomic BLUP (ssGBLUP) shows higher accuracy for fertility traits and low-heritability traits than the multi-step equivalent.

Determining Heat Stress Effects of Multiple Genetic Traits in Tropical Dairy Cattle Using Single-Step Genomic BLUP

Piriyaporn Sungkhapreecha et al.

Summary: Heat stress has a negative impact on dairy farming, making accurate genetic selection for heat tolerance crucial. This study used ssGBLUP and BLUP methods to investigate the genetic effects of heat stress on milk yield, milk quality, and dairy health traits, and found that the genomic predictions in the ssGBLUP method were more accurate than the BLUP method.

Summary: This study aimed to predict breeding values for sires and cows in the Iranian Holstein population at an early stage of lactation, supporting early sire selection and estimating associated genetic and phenotypic parameters. Cross-validation demonstrated that selecting sires based on daughters' early lactation information before they finish the first lactation can reduce generation interval and increase genetic gain.
