The transposable element-rich genome of the cereal pest Sitophilus oryzae

Nicolas Parisot et al.

Summary: The rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae, is a significant agricultural pest with an intracellular symbiotic relationship with the bacterium Sodalis pierantonius. Its genome contains a large amount of transposable elements, which are associated with the insect's endosymbiotic state. Compared to other beetles, S. oryzae has undergone a high rate of gene expansion. Reconstruction of host-symbiont metabolic networks revealed that S. pierantonius relies on the host for essential substances.

Insect antimicrobial peptides: potential weapons to counteract the antibiotic resistance

M. D. Manniello et al.

Summary: Misuse and overuse of antibiotics have led to the emergence of antibiotic resistance, a major threat to global public health according to the World Health Organization. Finding alternative drugs has proven to be a significant challenge, and insects, as the largest class of organisms in the animal kingdom, play a crucial role in humoral immune response with the production of antimicrobial peptides.

Bacterial Communities in Bacteriomes, Ovaries and Testes of three Geographical Populations of a Sap-Feeding Insect, Platypleura kaempferi (Hemiptera: Cicadidae)

Dandan Wang et al.

Summary: Mutualistic associations between symbiotic bacteria and their insect hosts are widespread. The bacterial community composition within hosts may be influenced by the population differentiation of the host insects and/or host plants, enhancing the understanding of the associations between bacterial community and population differentiation of sap-feeding insects. Hodgkinia and Sulcia were found to be key symbionts in cicadas, with their distribution correlated to population differentiation and host plant selection.

Two atypical gram-negative bacteria-binding proteins are involved in the antibacterial response in the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum)

J. Ji et al.

Summary: This study reveals that two atypical GNBPs in pea aphids play important roles in the aphid immune system, likely acting as PRRs in the prophenoloxidase pathway. The knockdown of their expression results in lower phenoloxidase activity, higher bacterial loads, and higher mortality in aphids after infection.

Structural diversity of symbionts and related cellular mechanisms underlying vertical symbiont transmission in cicadas

Dandan Wang et al.

Summary: This study reveals the diversity and complexity of symbionts in cicadas, and investigates the morphological changes and transmission mechanisms during vertical transmission. The results suggest that yeast-like fungal symbionts in cicadas represent an early example of symbiogenesis in insects, contributing to a better understanding of symbiont diversity and transmission mechanisms in insects.
