Advances in ultra-high temperature ceramics, composites, and coatings

Dewei Ni et al.

Summary: Ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) have ultra-high melting points, outstanding mechanical properties, and ablation resistance at elevated temperatures, making them promising materials for structural applications in extreme environments such as rockets and hypersonic vehicles. The development of high-entropy UHTCs is an emerging direction for ultra-high temperature materials.

Nanocrystalline high-entropy carbide ceramics with improved mechanical properties

Mengdong Ma et al.

Summary: Nanocrystalline (Hf0.25Zr0.25Ta0.25Ti0.25)C high-entropy carbide ceramics were successfully prepared through high-pressure sintering, showing improved mechanical properties at 1600 degrees C. Furthermore, the high-temperature Vickers hardness exhibited a linear decrease, influenced by the ZrO2 impurity phase at grain boundaries and the softening effect at elevated temperatures.

Mechanisms responsible for enhancing low-temperature oxidation resistance of nonstoichiometric (Zr,Ti)C

Huilin Lun et al.

Summary: A series of (Zr,Ti)C-x samples were fabricated and their oxidation behavior was investigated. The results showed that Ti substitutions enhanced the outward diffusion of carbon, forming a uniform carbon layer and improving the oxidation resistance below 550 degrees C. Increasing Ti concentration also increased the oxidation onset temperature, indicating improved oxidation resistance.

High-entropy metal carbide nanowires

Mengdong Ma et al.

Summary: The development of high-entropy ceramic nanomaterials is of great scientific and technological significance, but research on these materials is limited. In this study, we synthesized high-entropy metal carbide nanowires using a bamboo-based carbothermal method. The nanowires exhibited thermal stability and morphological evolution under different temperature and pressure conditions.

High-entropy ceramics: Present status, challenges, and a look forward

Huimin Xiang et al.

Summary: High-entropy ceramics are solid solutions of inorganic compounds with diverse crystal and electronic structures, providing large space for property tuning through band structure and phonon engineering. In addition to traditional strengthening, hardening, and low thermal conductivity, HECs exhibit new properties such as colossal dielectric constant and super ionic conductivity. Challenges in processing, characterization, and property predictions are highlighted, along with future directions for material exploration and in-depth characterization.

Oxidation behavior of non-stoichiometric (Zr,Hf,Ti)Cx carbide solid solution powders in air

Huilin Lun et al.

Summary: The study investigated the oxidation behavior of multi-component non-stoichiometric (Zr, Hf, Ti)C-x carbide solid solution and found that the composition of metallic atoms plays a crucial role in determining the oxidation resistance. The presence of a high Hf content was beneficial in forming an amorphous Zr-Hf-Ti-C-O oxycarbide layer as an oxygen barrier, while equiatomic ratios of metallic atoms reduced the growth rate of (Zr, Hf, Ti)O-2 oxide, improving the oxidation activation energy of (Zr, Hf, Ti)C-x.
