Xinjian Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the intrinsic conduction mechanism and optimal sintering atmosphere of (Ba0.85Ca0.15)(Zr0.1Ti0.9)O-3 (BCZT) ceramics were regulated by Mn-doping element. The undoped ceramics exhibited best electrical properties in O-2, while the Mn-doped ceramics sintered in N2 showed the highest insulation resistance and best piezoelectric properties.

Composition optimization, high-temperature stability, and thermal cycling performance of Sc-doped Gd2Zr2O7 thermal barrier coatings: Theoretical and experimental studies

Lei Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, Sc was doped into Gd2Zr2O7 to expand the potential for thermal barrier coating (TBC) applications. The solid solution mechanism of Sc in the lattice and the properties of the doped Gd2Zr2O7 were systematically studied. It was found that the optimal Sc doping content was 16.67 at% for achieving the best mechanical and thermophysical properties. The fabricated Gd-Sc/YSZ TBCs showed excellent phase and structural stability at high temperatures and exhibited outstanding thermal shock resistance.

High-entropy perovskite RETa3O9 ceramics for high-temperature environmental/thermal barrier coatings

Lin Chen et al.

Summary: Four high-entropy perovskite (HEP) RETa3O9 samples with excellent mechanical properties and thermal properties were fabricated using a spark plasma sintering method. The results showed that the HEP ceramics exhibited low thermal conductivity, high hardness, appropriate Young's modulus, and enhanced fracture toughness. The analysis of different parameters influencing the thermal conductivity can expand the applications of HEP materials.

Application of high-throughput first-principles calculations in ceramic innovation

Bin Liu et al.

Summary: Recent technical progress in the industry has led to an urgent requirement on new materials with enhanced multi-properties. Materials consisting of three and more elements have attracted increasing attention, and the traditional trial and error method cannot provide sufficient data efficiently. An efficient material innovation strategy is significant, and the first-principles calculation based on the density functional theory has become a powerful tool for accurate prediction of material properties. The advances of computational methods have made high throughput first-principles calculations popular in simulation-assisted material design.

High-entropy ceramics: Present status, challenges, and a look forward

Huimin Xiang et al.

Summary: High-entropy ceramics are solid solutions of inorganic compounds with diverse crystal and electronic structures, providing large space for property tuning through band structure and phonon engineering. In addition to traditional strengthening, hardening, and low thermal conductivity, HECs exhibit new properties such as colossal dielectric constant and super ionic conductivity. Challenges in processing, characterization, and property predictions are highlighted, along with future directions for material exploration and in-depth characterization.
