A Novel Collaborative Care Program to Augment Nursing Home Care During and After the COVID-19 Pandemic

Brian M. Wong et al.

Summary: The collaborative care program LTC+ was developed and implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic to enhance care in nursing homes and reduce unnecessary acute care transfers. It provided virtual consultations, nursing support, rapid access to lab services, and educational resources. Results showed that a significant number of consultations successfully addressed care concerns and avoided transfers to acute care. This integrated care model has the potential to improve access and equity in long-term care.

Hospital referral and capacity strategies in the two-tier healthcare systems

Jian-Jun Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the healthcare referral problem in a two-tier healthcare system, establishing a three-stage Stackelberg game model to explore the impact of referral rate, capacity level, revisit rate, and referral payments on the healthcare system. The findings suggest that equilibrium strategies evolve with revisit rate changes, and the referral process can enhance the performance of primary hospitals while potentially sacrificing the social welfare of comprehensive hospitals.

Pareto optimization for control agreement in patient referral coordination *

Na Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates a control agreement framework between upper-level hospitals (ULH) and lower-level hospitals (LLH) to help maximize their respective benefits. Utilizing a threshold-based policy and Pareto negotiation process, the control agreement aims to optimize hospital referral coordination practices.

Optimising the assignment of swabs and reagent for PCR testing during a viral epidemic

Alberto Santini

Summary: This article discusses the opportunity to increase testing capacity by optimally allocating swabs and reagents to laboratories and proposes an Integer Programming formulation to maximize the number of tests. The results show that increased inter-regional collaboration and local reagent production can significantly enhance testing capacity.

Experience in management of emergency and severe cases of non-COVID-19 during the outbreak of COVID-19

Weimin Yu et al.

Summary: This article discusses the importance of improving the treatment of emergency and severe cases of non-COVID-19 during the COVID-19 epidemic, emphasizing the necessity to focus on both treatment and prevention simultaneously. Through prehospital triage and in-hospital buffer, valuable experiences and references can be provided for the admission and treatment of emergency and severe cases during the epidemic.

Multiperiod Optimal Allocation of Emergency Resources in Support of Cross-Regional Disaster Sustainable Rescue

Yanyan Wang

Summary: Cross-regional allocation is necessary for rational resource utilization and effective disaster relief. An optimization model is proposed for emergency resources, focusing on efficiency and equity goals. Cross-regional relief can minimize dissatisfaction and prevent losses, providing flexibility for decision making in emergencies.

General practitioners' perspectives of the integrated health care system: a cross-sectional study in Wuhan, China

Fan Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the perceptions and opinions of 764 general practitioners in Hubei province, China, on the integrated health care system. Most GPs were familiar with the system, supported its development, and believed it could promote patient referral. The main benefit was seen as reducing patients' healthcare costs, while insufficient publicity and incomplete referral mechanisms were identified as obstacles.

A multi-stage stochastic programming approach to epidemic resource allocation with equity considerations

Xuecheng Yin et al.

Summary: The study introduces a multi-stage stochastic compartmental model to optimize the resource allocation for controlling infectious disease outbreaks under disease growth uncertainty. The model includes new equity metrics, infection and capacity equity, and demonstrates the superiority of the proposed stochastic programming model over its deterministic counterpart. The study applies the model to control Ebola Virus Disease in West Africa and highlights the importance of fairness in resource allocation to effectively minimize the total number of infections and deaths.

Balancing scarce hospital resources during the COVID-19 pandemic using discrete-event simulation

G. J. Melman et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the proposal of a discrete-event simulation model to evaluate resource allocation strategies in hospitals. The study found that in COVID-19 scenarios, ring-fencing operating theatre capacity strategy outperforms others, although it results in higher critical care rejections.
