Parameters for subthalamic deep brain stimulation in patients with dystonia: a systematic review

Yuhan Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate optimal stimulation parameters for treating dystonia with STN-DBS. Results showed that the optimal parameters vary among patients, with improvement rate being linearly dependent on stimulation parameters. Adverse effects include dyskinesia and depression.

A randomised double-blind controlled study of Deep Brain Stimulation for dystonia in STN or GPi - A long term follow-up after up to 15 years

Aske Nicolai Hock et al.

Summary: This long-term follow-up study observed 14 patients with cervical or generalized dystonia who received stimulation in GPi, STN or both targets. The results showed that both GPi-DBS and STN-DBS had long-term effects and were equally safe and effective for up to 15 years in dystonia treatment.

Neuroimaging and neuropathology studies of X-linked dystonia parkinsonism

Christine J. Arasaratnam et al.

Summary: X-linked Dystonia Parkinsonism (XDP) is a recessive, genetically inherited neurodegenerative disorder endemic to Panay Island in the Philippines. Clinical symptoms include dystonia and parkinsonian traits. The main focus of XDP research is on the basal ganglia, but further investigation is needed to understand its detailed pathology and disease indicators.

Deep Brain Stimulation Treating Dystonia: A Systematic Review of Targets, Body Distributions and Etiology Classifications

Houyou Fan et al.

Summary: Both GPi-DBS and STN-DBS are safe and effective in treating dystonia, with patients showing different levels of symptom improvement and quality of life enhancement depending on the type of dystonia. Patients with primary dystonia respond better to DBS in terms of efficacy.
