Metabolic Obesity in People with Normal Body Weight (MONW)-Review of Diagnostic Criteria

Waldemar Pluta et al.

Summary: Disorders of metabolic obesity with normal body weight (MONW) are recognized as risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes, but they are not diagnosed in clinical practice. There is no consensus on the definition of MONW, and measuring insulin resistance or obesity among non-obese individuals is not widely applicable. Understanding the relationship between metabolic disorders like MONW and higher mortality risk from cardiovascular causes prompts the need for action to effectively detect metabolic abnormalities in individuals with normal body weight.

AGEs-Induced and Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress/Inflammation-Mediated Regulation of GLUT4 Expression and Atherogenesis in Diabetes Mellitus

Marisa Passarelli et al.

Summary: In recent years, research has shown that the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and inflammatory stress play important roles in the development and progression of diabetes mellitus and its complications. The generation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) due to hyperglycemia further exacerbates ER and inflammatory stress, leading to destabilization of glycemic control and accelerated development of complications.

Amyloidogenesis of feline amylin and plasma levels in cats with diabetes mellitus or pancreatitis

L. Jotha-Mattos et al.

Summary: Amylin, a pancreatic hormone cosecreted with insulin, plays a role in pancreatic amyloidosis and beta-cell apoptosis in diabetic cats and humans. Studies indicate that cat amylin is more prone to amyloid fibrillation compared to human amylin, with higher plasma amylin levels observed in diabetic cats and cats with pancreatitis. This suggests a potential influence on the progression of diabetes mellitus and beta-cell failure.

Differences in metabolic profiles between the Burmese, the Maine coon and the Birman cat-Three breeds with varying risk for diabetes mellitus

Malin Ohlund et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Burmese cats are five times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes compared to other purebred cats, with distinctive differences in serum metabolome compared to two other cat breeds. Burmese cats had higher insulin and lower adiponectin concentrations, and their metabolic profile resembled that of people with insulin resistance.

Crosstalk between Metabolic Disorders and Immune Cells

Shinichi Saitoh et al.

Summary: Metabolic syndrome is caused by insulin resistance and multiple risk factors. Chronic inflammation due to obesity is primarily caused by pro-inflammatory M1 macrophages entering adipose tissue, which in turn recruit more pro-inflammatory immune cells to enhance the immune response.

Feline comorbidities: Pathophysiology and management of the obese diabetic cat

Melissa Clark et al.

Summary: Obesity in cats can lead to insulin resistance and progression to diabetes mellitus, with management strategies including dietary modification, insulin therapy, and potential new treatments such as GLP-1 agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors. Prioritizing weight control and targeted diet and medication approaches is crucial in managing diabetes in cats.

Animal models of diabetic retinopathy

Jose Quiroz et al.

Summary: The retina is the layer of the eye that conducts light impulses to the optic nerve for vision, and diseases like diabetic retinopathy can lead to blindness. Diabetes affects millions globally and diabetic retinopathy is a common complication, highlighting the need for new therapeutics to address its underlying pathophysiology. Studying DR pathogenesis in animal models is crucial in developing treatments to repair damaged retinal tissue and reverse the disease.
