A clinical case definition of post-COVID-19 condition by a Delphi consensus

Joan B. Soriano et al.

Summary: People with COVID-19 might experience long-term symptoms known as long COVID or long-haul COVID. The lack of a standardized definition hinders the understanding and treatment of this condition. In a WHO-led Delphi process, a consensus definition was developed, stating that post-COVID-19 condition occurs in individuals with a history of SARS-CoV-2 infection, with symptoms lasting for at least 2 months and impacting everyday functioning. This common framework provides a foundation for future studies and therapy.

Long-Term Effects of COVID-19

Shreeya Joshee et al.

Summary: COVID-19 is the third deadly coronavirus infection of the 21st century, with higher mortality rate compared to its predecessors. From December 2019 to July 2021, it has infected nearly 200 million people and resulted in over 4 million deaths. A comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology, clinical predictors, and epidemiology is needed to develop effective management for the long-term effects of COVID-19.

Early and strong antibody responses to SARS-CoV-2 predict disease severity in COVID-19 patients

Janis Plume et al.

Summary: This study is the first to simultaneously assess IgG, IgA, IgE, and IgM responses to multiple SARS-CoV-2 antigens. The results indicate that antibody responses are closely associated with the severity of the disease, and high levels of antibodies may exacerbate the disease. In addition, the study found that IgE responses to SARS-CoV-2 are positively correlated with disease severity, suggesting a link between high antibody levels and mast cell activation.

Summary: The study focuses on the role of retroviruses, particularly human endogenous retroviruses (HERV), in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The activation of HERV, specifically the envelope protein HML-2, has been found in the brains of ALS patients and is neurotoxic. However, there is currently no specific treatment targeting HERV, highlighting the need for further research and clinical trials.

Elicitors and phenotypes of adult patients with proven IgE-mediated food allergy and non-immune-mediated food hypersensitivity to food additives

Aikaterina Alexiou et al.

Summary: Food allergy is a growing health concern in Europe, with a prevalence of 2%-3% in adults. Non-immune-mediated food hypersensitivity accounts for around 1% and can resemble IgE-mediated allergic reactions. A double-blind placebo-controlled food challenge is the gold standard for diagnosis. This study analyzed data from 541 patients with suspected food hypersensitivity and found that IgE-mediated food allergy was more common, with hives and angioedema as frequent symptoms. Non-immune-mediated reactions to food additives commonly resulted in flushing and diarrhea, and additives were the most frequent triggers.

Summary: Some COVID-19 convalescents suffer from post-acute COVID syndrome (PACS)/long COVID, and it is important to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms as well as potential predictors of their long-term responses. The immune system and T cell alterations are proposed as drivers of post-acute COVID syndrome, with severity and time having different effects on T cell subsets.
