Assessing the External Exposome Using Wearable Passive Samplers and High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry among South African Children Participating in the VHEMBE Study

Jeremy P. Koelmel et al.

Summary: Children in high-pollution areas of South Africa were found to be exposed to a wide range of airborne chemicals, including pesticides, plasticizers, and combustion products. These findings highlight the need for further research and interventions to protect the health of children in low- and middle-income countries.

Development and Application of a Polydimethylsiloxane-Based Passive Air Sampler to Assess Personal Exposure to SARS-CoV-2

Darryl M. Angel et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of a PDMS-based passive sampler as a tool for assessing personal exposure to aerosol and droplet SARS-CoV-2 in high-risk settings. The findings demonstrate that the passive sampler can effectively detect personal exposure to the virus, providing potential for early detection of cases and guidance on infection control protocols.

Operationalizing the Exposome Using Passive Silicone Samplers

Zoe Coates Fuentes et al.

Summary: The article introduces the concept of exposome and its importance in evaluating non-genetic causes of diseases. It emphasizes the advantages of using silicone passive sampling devices (PSDs) for exposome phenotyping, and evaluates the wide range of applications and chemical classes characterized using these samplers in population studies. The article also discusses strategies for incorporating measures of the external exposome using PSDs and highlights the advantages of reducing exposure measurement variability and providing a more comprehensive exposome record.

The Exposome in the Era of One Health

Peng Gao

Summary: Current studies in environmental chemistry and toxicology often overlook the complexity of multiple stressors and receptors in the dynamic exposome and One Health challenges. Developing comprehensive frameworks to understand the interactions and holistic consequences of chemical, biological, and physical stressors in the environment is crucial for effective risk assessment and environmental treatment. Emerging techniques and concepts provide opportunities to address this need.

A Novel Personal Passive Sampler for Collecting Gaseous Phthalates

Yun Hong et al.

Summary: The study developed a novel personal passive sampler for characterizing gaseous phthalates near the air-skin interface and verified its utility. The passive sampler effectively prevented particles and skin-related chemicals from adhering to the sampling disk, collecting only gaseous PAEs.

Benzophenone Accumulates over Time from the Degradation of Octocrylene in Commercial Sunscreen Products

C. A. Downs et al.

Summary: The study investigated the presence of benzophenone in commercial sunscreen products, the increase in benzophenone concentration over time, and the source of benzophenone contamination from octocrylene degradation. The results showed that octocrylene can generate benzophenone through a reaction, and up to 70% of benzophenone in sunscreen products may be absorbed through the skin. Regulatory agencies should promptly review the safety of octocrylene as a benzophenone generator in SPF or any consumer products.

Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes: Placement of Wearable Passive Samplers Alters Exposure Profiles Observed

Jeremy P. Koelmel et al.

Summary: This study assessed personal air contaminant exposure using passive samplers worn in parallel across 32 participant's wrists, chest, and shoes over 24 h, finding that sampler placement can impact personal exposure profiles. Chest samplers predominantly captured more volatile exposures, while shoe samplers were more sensitive to particle-bound compounds.

Monitoring Human Exposure to Organophosphate Esters: Comparing Silicone Wristbands with Spot Urine Samples as Predictors of Internal Dose

Kate Hoffman et al.

Summary: Silicone wristbands provide quantitative estimates of internal organophosphate ester (OPE) exposure and show linear uptake of OPE over time. Wristbands and spot urine samples exhibit moderate to strong correlations for certain OPE metabolites, performing well as integrated exposure estimates. Further studies investigating additional compounds are warranted to explore the potential advantages of silicone wristbands.
