Light absorption properties and molecular compositions of water-soluble and methanol-soluble organic carbon emitted from wood pyrolysis and combustion

Ranran Zhao et al.

Summary: Organic carbon (OC) emitted from biomass burning plays a crucial role in the global radiation budget. This study investigated the properties of primary OC emitted from wood pyrolysis and combustion under different atmospheres. The results showed that methanol-soluble OC (MSOC) has higher light absorption efficiency compared to water-soluble OC (WSOC), especially for OC emitted from the nitrogen pyrolysis atmosphere. The molecular compositions of MSOC also exhibited higher values of molecular weight, unsaturation, and aromaticity under nitrogen atmosphere. In addition, the light absorption efficiency was positively correlated with molecular weight, unsaturation, and aromaticity, while negatively correlated with elemental ratios of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur.

Insights into the Associations between Optical and Molecular Signatures of Dissolved Organic Matter from Urban Stormwater Runoff

Jiangyong Chu et al.

Summary: This research focused on the correlation analysis between the optical and molecular signatures of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in urban stormwater runoff. The study found that the optical parameters are effectively correlated with individual molecules detected by mass spectrometry. Additionally, molecular characterization parameters are also associated with three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy. The findings suggest that different molecular mechanisms result in varying resistance to degradation for different components.

Fluorescence characteristics of water-soluble organic carbon in atmospheric aerosol

Guangming Wu et al.

Summary: Fluorescence spectroscopy is commonly used to analyze dissolved organic matter in aquatic environments, and its application in atmospheric aerosols has been increasing. However, current research on WSOC characterization in the atmosphere is still limited and presents challenges. Studies focus on the impact of photochemical reactions and aging processes on fluorescence properties of atmospheric WSOC, as well as the differences in fluorescent components between the atmosphere and hydrosphere.

Optical Properties of Secondary Organic Aerosol Produced by Nitrate Radical Oxidation of Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds

Quanfu He et al.

Summary: The nighttime oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) by nitrate radicals leads to the formation of substantial secondary organic aerosol (SOA) containing oxygenated organic nitrates (ONs), which can absorb and scatter solar radiation in the atmosphere. The SOA generated has an atmospheric photochemical bleaching lifetime of >6.2 h, suggesting that some ONs may serve as stable nitrogen oxide sinks in the atmosphere.

Unraveling roles of dissolved organic matter in high arsenic groundwater based on molecular and optical signatures

Wen Qiao et al.

Summary: Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a crucial role in mobilizing arsenic in groundwater. The properties of DOM in high-arsenic groundwater, such as the presence of recalcitrant organic compounds, can contribute to arsenic enrichment. Additionally, the degradation of labile organic matter may lead to the release of arsenic into the groundwater.

Molecular composition and optical property of humic-like substances (HULIS) in winter-time PM2.5 in the rural area of North China Plain

Hao Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular composition, sources, and optical properties of humic-like substances (HULIS) in winter-time PM2.5 in a rural area of North China Plain. Biomass burning, coal combustion, and secondary formation were identified as the main sources of HULIS, while the organic carbon concentrations of HULIS varied between daytime and nighttime but contributed significantly to WSOC. This research provided insights into the composition and characteristics of HULIS in NCP, shedding light on their potential sources and impact on atmospheric optics.

Soil Organic Matter Characterization by Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FTICR MS): A Critical Review of Sample Preparation, Analysis, and Data Interpretation

William Bahureksa et al.

Summary: The biogeochemical cycling of soil organic matter is crucial for soil health, water quality, carbon storage, and greenhouse gas emissions. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR MS) is a powerful analytical technique that helps to understand the speciation and transformation of SOM. This review discusses recent strategies for SOM characterization by FTICR MS, focusing on sample collection, preparation, analysis, and data interpretation. The study also highlights research gaps, biases, and future directions for improving our understanding of organic matter cycling in terrestrial ecosystems.

Molecular Dynamics and Light Absorption Properties of Atmospheric Dissolved Organic Matter

Hongxing Jiang et al.

Summary: This study used Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and light absorption measurements to characterize atmospheric dissolved organic matter (ADOM) in aerosol samples from Guangzhou, revealing the influence of environmental factors on the molecular composition and light absorption properties of BrC. Nitrogen-containing species played a key role in the variation of BrC light absorption. Meteorological conditions and anthropogenic activities were identified as the main drivers of BrC composition.

Measurement report: Long-emission-wavelength chromophores dominate the light absorption of brown carbon in aerosols over Bangkok: impact from biomass burning

Jiao Tang et al.

Summary: The study found that the emission wavelength of fluorescent chromophores in environmental samples tended to increase compared with that of primary combustion emissions, possibly due to secondary formation or aging processes. Fluorescent indices revealed that the light-absorbing chromophores were not significantly humified and consisted of a mixture of organic matter from terrestrial and microbial sources, exhibiting different characteristics from primary biomass burning and coal combustion results. A multiple linear regression analysis showed that larger fluorescent chromophores that were oxygen-rich and highly aromatic with high molecular weights were the key contributors to light absorption, particularly at longer emission wavelengths (lambda(max) > 500 nm). Positive matrix factorization analysis also indicated that up to 50% of these light-absorbing chromophores originated from biomass burning emissions.

Urban organic aerosol composition in eastern China differs from north to south: molecular insight from a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (Orbitrap) study

Kai Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed organic aerosol (OA) in PM2.5 samples from three cities in China, revealing significant differences in the chemical characteristics of organic compounds between cities. Samples from Changchun had higher levels of polyaromatics, while samples from Shanghai and Guangzhou showed higher levels of oxidation processes in organic compounds. Sulfur-containing compounds were mainly aliphatic with low degrees of unsaturation and aromaticity in all cities.
