Enhancement and optimization of gamma radiation shielding by doped nano HgO into nanoscale bentonite

Elhassan A. Allam et al.

Summary: Nano-scaled shielding materials were fabricated by doping Nano-mercuric oxide into Nano-Bentonite at different weight percentages. The fabricated nanocomposites were evaluated for their shielding properties against gamma radiation, and it was found that increasing the doping concentration led to an increase in the mass attenuation coefficient.

Enhanced Bentonite/PVA Matrix for Advanced Shielding Applications

Fawzy Hammad Sallam et al.

Summary: The shielding characteristics of natural bentonite can be enhanced through calcination and ball-milling processes, providing protection against gamma radiation. Calcination increases the oxide content, improving the mass attenuation coefficient, but also increases particle size, which negatively affects the attenuation coefficient. Ball-milling is used to reduce particle size and improve the attenuation properties. The study determines the shielding parameters for calcinated, ball-milled, pressed bentonite samples under different gamma-ray energies, and shows that the pressed bentonite with the highest linear and mass attenuation coefficients has been calcinated and ball-milled at 700 degrees C.
