Long-Term Spatiotemporal Variation of Net Primary Productivity and Its Correlation With the Urbanization: A Case Study in Hubei Province, China

Ke Wu et al.

Summary: Net primary productivity (NPP) is a critical component in terrestrial carbon cycles. This study investigated the spatiotemporal variation of NPP and its relationship with urbanization in Hubei Province, China from 2001 to 2012. The results showed that high NPP areas were located in highlands with woodland, while low NPP areas were mainly in urban regions. Both population and GDP had a strong correlation with NPP.

Summary: This study explores the spatial and temporal dynamic characteristics of regional forest net primary productivity (NPP) in Shaoguan City, China, and analyzes the driving factors of NPP changes. The results show an increasing trend of NPP and the greatest influence from forest stand factors. Increasing the proportion of mixed forests and rationalizing the forest age group structure can further enhance NPP growth potential in the future.

Dynamic Simulation of Land Use/Cover Change and Assessment of Forest Ecosystem Carbon Storage under Climate Change Scenarios in Guangdong Province, China

Lei Tian et al.

Summary: This study integrated land use simulation and ecosystem services valuation models to assess the spatiotemporal changes in land use/cover and ecosystem carbon storage in Guangdong under different future scenarios. The results showed variations in land use patterns and carbon storage based on different scenarios, with population, elevation, temperature, and distance to water identified as key driving factors. The study recommends controlling population and economic growth, balancing urban expansion and ecological conservation, and increasing forest land area to enhance ecosystem carbon storage.

Spatiotemporal heterogeneity of net primary productivity and response to climate change in the mountain regions of southwest China

Yahui Wang et al.

Summary: Monitoring changes in net primary productivity (NPP) of vegetation and its response to climatic changes is crucial for understanding the carbon cycle mechanism and promoting human well-being. This study focused on the Hengduan Mountain region in southwest China and found that NPP exhibited a slightly increasing trend, with spatial heterogeneity and complexity in response to climate change. The research highlighted the importance of temperature over precipitation in influencing NPP, with shorter lag times in NPP response to temperature changes compared to precipitation across most growth stages.

Spatial correlations between landscape patterns and net primary productivity: A case study of the Shule River Basin, China

Yanyan Zhou et al.

Summary: Human activities and environmental degradation have led to changes in landscape patterns that can affect net primary productivity (NPP) globally. This study analyzed the correlation between landscape metrics and NPP at different scales, finding spatial variations and higher correlation at the 30 km scale. Different landscape metrics showed varying degrees of positive or negative correlation with NPP at different scales, with composition metrics playing a more significant role at the class level.

Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Net Primary Productivity in China's Urban Lands during 1982-2015

Helin Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the impact of China's rapid urbanization on NPP, showing a decrease in NPP in urban areas but an increase in NPP in buffer zones, primarily influenced by temperature and sunshine duration. Increasing temperature promotes NPP growth, while sunshine duration and vegetation loss contribute to NPP decline in urban agglomerations.

Spatial and temporal differentiation and influencing factors of environmental governance performance in the Yangtze River Delta, China

Youxin Hou et al.

Summary: From 2013 to 2018, the overall environmental governance performance of the Yangtze River Delta region showed a steady growth trend, with Jiangsu Province and Shanghai exhibiting a steady increase in performance while Anhui and Zhejiang Province experienced fluctuation. Cities with better EGP are mainly located in the central and southern regions, while those with poor EGP are mainly in the northern part of the Yangtze River Delta. The regression analysis revealed that economic development level has a significant positive impact on EGP, while industrial structure and foreign investment have negative impacts, and R&D investment intensity has an insignificant positive impact on environmental governance performance in the region.

Drought monitoring in arid and semi-arid region based on multi-satellite datasets in northwest, China

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: This study introduced a new remote sensing drought monitoring index, RSDEI, which combines multiple climate factors to comprehensively evaluate the drought situation of a region. The high correlation of RSDEI with SPEI, NPP, and crop yield indicates its effectiveness in monitoring drought. The research results from 2001 to 2019 in northwest China showed significant drought variations in different months as monitored by RSDEI.

Run to the hills: Forest growth responsiveness to drought increased at higher elevation during the late 20th century

Marin Pompa-Garcia et al.

Summary: Climate warming is expected to enhance forest growth in cold-limited biomes while triggering reductions in drought-limited biomes. However, the influence of temperature and drought on tree growth varies across different biomes and elevation gradients. The relationship between tree growth and minimum temperatures weakened while the drought-growth relationship strengthened, with differences observed across biomes and elevation gradients. Temperature controls on forest growth are relaxing as the climate warms, while drought is becoming a more significant constraint for tree growth.

Quantifying the contributions of human activities and climate change to vegetation net primary productivity dynamics in China from 2001 to 2016

Wenyan Ge et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the relative contributions of climate change and human activities to net primary productivity (NPP) in China using a two-step methodology based on RESTREND. Results showed a significant increase in NPP during the study period, with both climate change and human activities playing favorable roles in vegetation growth. Climate factors contributed 60.06% to vegetation changes, while human activities contributed 39.94% to NPP. Precipitation, temperature, solar radiation, and other climatic factors all had varying impacts on vegetation growth in different regions of China.
