Large surface acoustic wave nonreciprocity in synthetic antiferromagnets

Hiroki Matsumoto et al.

Summary: In this study, the transmission of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) in ferromagnetic/non-magnetic/ferromagnetic trilayers was investigated. It was found that the SAW transmission amplitude depends on its propagation direction when the two ferromagnetic layers are coupled antiferromagnetically. The degree of SAW nonreciprocity increases with increasing exchange coupling strength and reaches 37 dB mm(-1) for a device with the thinnest spacer layer. These findings demonstrate the potential of interlayer exchange coupled synthetic antiferromagnets for acoustic nonreciprocal transmission devices.

Engineered magnetization and exchange stiffness in direct-write Co-Fe nanoelements

S. A. Bunyaev et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the engineering of magnetic properties in CoFe-based nanodisks fabricated by FEBID technique. The material composition in the nanodisks is tuned in situ via the e-beam waiting time and post-growth irradiation with Ga ions. The achieved variation in saturation magnetization M-s bridges the gap between widely used magnonic materials.

Living up to its potential-Direct-write nanofabrication with focused electron beams

Michael Huth et al.

Summary: FEBID has traditionally been used as an auxiliary process in sample preparation for transmission electron microscopy, but has now become a leading technical approach in lithography mask repair and materials/device fabrication. Despite its rather exclusive user base, there is a hope to generate more interest and excitement in FEBID within the broader scientific community.

Granular Hall Sensors for Scanning Probe Microscopy

Roland Sachser et al.

Summary: Scanning Hall probe microscopy is used for minimally invasive characterization of magnetic thin films and nanostructures by measuring the emanating magnetic stray field. Sensor probes typically use highly miniaturized spin-valve elements or semimetals. Nanogranular ferromagnetic Hall devices fabricated by direct-write method can be tailor-made for any probe geometry and the magnetic stray field sensitivity can be optimized in situ.

Summary: Extending 2D nanodisks into 3D nanovolcanoes allows deliberate tuning of higher-frequency eigenmodes without affecting the lowest-frequency mode. These nanovolcanoes can be viewed as multi-mode microwave resonators and 3D building blocks for nanomagnonics.

Advances in coherent coupling between magnons and acoustic phonons

Yi Li et al.

Summary: The interaction between magnetic and acoustic excitations has inspired interdisciplinary studies that combine straintronics and spintronics, enabling the construction of on-chip coherent information processing networks. Recent progress in magnon-phonon coupled dynamic systems has highlighted features such as nonreciprocal acoustic wave propagation and strong coupling between magnons and phonons in magnetic thin-film systems, providing a platform for their coherent manipulation and transduction. Surface acoustic wave resonators are being explored for coherent quantum transduction, and novel acoustic circuit designs may have applications in microwave spintronics.
