Adsorption of lead and cadmium by microplastics and their desorption behavior as vectors in the gastrointestinal environment

Wang Li et al.

Summary: The behavior of microplastics as carriers of environmental contaminants can change the fate and transport of toxic substances in aquatic systems. Factors such as pH, humic acid, and particle size play a crucial role in the adsorption of metal ions on microplastics. In a simulated gastrointestinal environment, the desorption rates of metal ions from microplastics are high, suggesting a potential toxicological risk after ingestion of metal-contaminated microplastics.
