Synthesis of biochar-supported zinc oxide and graphene oxide/zinc oxide nanocomposites to remediate tartrazine dye from aqueous solution using fixed-bed column reactor

Shazia Perveen et al.

Summary: The treatment of textile effluents is a significant concern in wastewater treatment due to their resistance to conventional methods. In this study, biochar-caged zinc oxide (BC-ZnO) and graphene oxide/zinc oxide (BC-GO/ZnO) nanocomposites were synthesized and employed for the sorption of tartrazine dye from wastewater. The adsorption performance was evaluated through dynamic fixed-bed column experiments, and the BC-GO/ZnO NCs showed the highest adsorptive removal of the dye, as well as the ability to be regenerated multiple times.

New insights into the capture performance and mechanism of hazardous metals Cr3+ and Cd2+ onto an effective layered double hydroxide based material

Sidi Zhu et al.

Summary: The phosphonate functionalized layered double hydroxide proved to be an excellent adsorbent for capturing toxicant metal ions, with a maximum adsorption capacity dominated by chemisorption and monolayer interaction. In addition, the spent adsorbent showed satisfactory reusability after multiple cycles, and Forcite simulation suggested electrostatic interaction as a critical mechanism for modifiers and the surface sites of the interlayer.

Summary: In this study, PS-DVB/Fe3O4 nanocomposite was successfully synthesized using in situ chemical polymerization process, characterized by various techniques. The addition of Fe3O4 significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity of PS-DVB for Tartrazine, with a removal efficiency of 98%. The breakthrough properties of the adsorption technique were investigated by adjusting parameters such as liquid flow rate, initial Tartrazine concentration, and bed height.

Networks of Effectiveness? The Impact of Politicization on Bureaucratic Performance in Pakistan

Sameen A. Mohsin Ali

Summary: Bureaucratic performance varies greatly within low-capacity states. Politicians and bureaucrats enhance performance by appointing hand-picked bureaucrats to key posts, based on established patronage relationships. Although temporary networks of effectiveness are created, they are rendered unsustainable by the very patronage relationships that create them, preventing them from evolving into more permanent pockets of effectiveness.

Modeling the effect of process parameters on the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants using artificial neural networks

Bamidele Victor Ayodele et al.

Summary: This study utilized artificial neural networks for modeling the photocatalytic degradation of various organic pollutants, with optimized neural network architectures demonstrating high prediction accuracy and low error rates. Sensitivity analysis indicated that multiple parameters significantly influenced the photodegradation processes, with photocatalyst concentration, phenol concentration, pH of the solution, hydrothermal temperature, and methylene blue initial concentration being the most influential factors.

Simultaneous adsorption of acidic and basic dyes onto magnetized polypeptidylated-Hb composites *

Matthew Essandoh et al.

Summary: Magnetized, polypeptidylated hemoglobin was successfully used for the simultaneous adsorption of acidic and basic dyes. The adsorption behavior followed pseudo-second order kinetics, with Langmuir isotherm model accurately describing the adsorption effect. Furthermore, the stability of the adsorbent under neutral conditions and the negligible impact on adsorption capacity after multiple cycles of dye desorbing regeneration treatment were observed.

Summary: The study found that tartrazine was frequently found in Iranian cooked rice and confectioneries. The interaction between tartrazine and transferrin was mainly achieved through hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces. This color additive may influence the protein structure, particularly the secondary and tertiary structure of Apo-transferrin.

Summary: Biochar caged zirconium ferrite (BC-ZrFe2O5) nanocomposites were prepared and their adsorption capacity for RB19 dye was evaluated. The adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and Sips model was the best fit among isotherms. Factors such as flow rate, dye concentration, and material quantity had significant effects on fixed-bed sorption. BC-ZrFe2O5 nanocomposites showed promising adsorption efficiency and could be used for dye removal from textile effluents.

Enhanced simultaneous adsorption of As(iii), Cd(ii), Pb(ii) and Cr(vi) ions from aqueous solution using cassava root husk-derived biochar loaded with ZnO nanoparticles

P. T. Tho et al.

Summary: This study discusses the modification of cassava root husk-derived biochar with ZnO nanoparticles for simultaneous adsorption of As(iii), Cd(ii), Pb(ii), and Cr(vi). The optimal conditions for heavy metal adsorption were found to be at a pH of 6-7, contact time of 60 min, and initial metal concentration of 80 mg L-1. The modified biochar showed higher adsorption capacities compared to the unmodified biochar, with CRHB-ZnO3 exhibiting the best performance.
