Removal of cadmium ions from water using coaxially electrospun PAN/ZnO-encapsulated PVDF nanofiber membranes

Abdulaziz K. Assaifan et al.

Summary: Electrospun nanofiber membranes have been widely used as heavy metal ion adsorbents, but are usually mechanically weak. Core-shell nanofiber membranes were produced by coaxial electrospinning of PVDF nanofibers as core nanofibers for mechanical support, and ZnO nanoparticles loaded PAN as shell nanofibers to enhance adsorption of cadmium ions, leading to a significant enhancement in adsorption capacity. Experimental results were better fitted with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm equation.

Use of agro-industrial residues of plantain (Musa paradisiaca) in the adsorption of Ni (II)

Candelaria Tejada-Tovar et al.

Summary: In this study, the effectiveness of using plantain starch residues for removing Ni (II) from aqueous solution was investigated. The optimal adsorption conditions were determined to be 55 degrees C, 0.6775 g of adsorbent, and an initial concentration of 368 mg/L, resulting in a maximum adsorption capacity of 47.57 mg/g and a removal rate of 87%. The kinetic model that best described the process was the pseudo-second-order model, and the isotherm models that fit the experimental data were Langmuir and Freundlich. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that the process was favorable, endothermic, and irreversible under the studied conditions.

Efficient removal of chromate at wide range of pH values by β-FeC2O4•2H2O with an amplified Kirkendall effect

Pengyuan He et al.

Summary: In this study, the removal of chromate (Cr(VI)) from simulated wastewater by beta-FeC2O4 center dot 2H(2)O was investigated. The results showed that beta-FeC2O4 center dot 2H(2)O had a high Cr(VI) removal capacity due to the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by Fe(II). The study also revealed the mechanism of Cr(VI) removal by beta-FeC2O4 center dot 2H(2)O through careful examination of the morphology and chemical compositions of the material.

Summary: A functionalized porous nanofibrous membrane loaded with MgO nanoparticles was prepared by coaxial electrospinning and post-processing method, and showed high efficiency in removing copper ions from aqueous solutions. The membrane had a larger specific surface area, a more uniform diameter distribution, and surface pores, as well as good mechanical properties and hydrophilicity. The adsorption of copper ions reached equilibrium within 3 hours, with an optimal adsorption pH of 5 and a maximum adsorption capacity of 354 mg/g. The membrane also demonstrated good recycling performance.
