Neurofilament light chain concentration in an aging population

Aurelie Ladang et al.

Summary: In this study, we assessed the concentration of neurofilament light chain (NF-L) in the serum of 409 community-dwelling adults aged over 65 years. We found that NF-L concentration was associated with kidney function, age, and body mass index (BMI). Subjects with self-reported neurological disorders had higher NF-L concentration. Furthermore, NF-L concentration was also associated with cognitive impairment but not with depression. It is important to interpret NF-L measurements with caution, especially in patients with renal failure.

Summary: Blood-based serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) is being investigated as a biomarker for prognosis and treatment response in multiple sclerosis patients. It reflects ongoing inflammatory-driven neuroaxonal damage and has the potential to guide individualized clinical decision-making.
