Dissolved silica-catalyzed disordered dolomite precipitation

Yihang Fang et al.

Summary: This study presents a new abiotic mechanism with dissolved silica catalyzed dolomite precipitation, providing new insights into the long-standing problem of dolomite formation. The research demonstrates that dissolved silica in high Mg:Ca ratio solutions promotes the precipitation of disordered dolomite and inhibits aragonite formation. The study also suggests that dissolved silica has similar properties to other catalysts in room-temperature dolomite synthesis.

Quantitative evaluation of the roles of ocean chemistry and climate on ooid size across the Phanerozoic: Global versus local controls

Ardiansyah Koeshidayatullah et al.

Summary: This study uses a convolutional neural network-based segmentation method to measure ooid sizes and provides a systematic sampling of ooid sizes throughout the Phanerozoic. The numerical model shows that typical-sized ooids can grow under a wide range of parameter combinations, while giant ooids can only form under specific conditions. The study also finds that the formation of giant ooids is associated with conditions favorable for rapid CaCO3 precipitation.

Cambrian marine radial cerebroid ooids: Participatory products of microbial processes

Enzhao Xiao et al.

Summary: The Cambrian Miaolingian Series strata in North China contain cerebroid ooids, characterized by serrated margins and unique micrite and microspar compositions. Petrographic, XRD, SEM, EPMA, and isotope analyses were conducted to study the origin and development conditions of these ooids, revealing a genetic relationship with lithomicrobial mats. Isotopic data suggest carbon sources from organic-rich zones and support microbial involvement in the formation of cerebroid ooids on the North China Platform.
