Does calcium carbonate influence clay mineral transformation in soils developed from slope deposits in Southern Poland?

Joanna Beata Kowalska et al.

Summary: The study found that despite different calcium carbonate distributions and morphological features, the clay mineral composition in soils developed on menilite shales slope deposits was very uniform, with secondary phases such as chlorite, illite, vermiculite, kaolinite, and mixed phases present in all horizons. This suggests a similar mass movement controlling the slope covers formation and a consistent scale of pedogenesis advancement across all soils. The weak intensity of illuviation process within the homogeneous substrate may have contributed to the uniform composition of clay minerals in the soils.

SEM-EDX study of bentonite alteration under the influence of cement alkaline solutions

Daniel E. Gonzalez-Santamaria et al.

Summary: This study extensively analyzed the morphological and chemical changes on the surface of bentonite exposed to alkaline pore fluids released by different cement-based materials, revealing different types of structural alterations. These changes were evident at early stages and were related to the precipitation of carbonates and silicates.

Conditions favoring local podzolization in soils developed from flysch regolith - A case study from the Bieszczady Mountains in southeastern Poland

Lukasz Musielok et al.

Summary: Podzolization mainly occurs in soils with highly leached and coarse-textured parent materials under the influence of humid climates where forest or heath vegetation supply enough organic matter to form organic horizons. This study aimed to determine the optimal conditions triggering podzolization in soils in the Bieszczady Mountains in southeastern Poland, with factors such as climate, parent material composition, and vegetation cover influencing the occurrence of Podzols.

IMA-CNMNC approved mineral symbols

Laurence N. Warr

Summary: This contribution presents the first International Mineralogical Association (IMA) Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) approved collection of 5744 mineral name abbreviations by combining four methods of nomenclature based on the Kretz symbol approach. The collection incorporates 991 previously defined abbreviations for mineral groups and species and presents a further 4753 new symbols that cover all currently listed IMA minerals. Adopting IMA-CNMNC approved symbols is considered a necessary step in standardising abbreviations by employing a system compatible with that used for symbolising the chemical elements.

Behavioral differences between weathering and pedogenesis in a subtropical humid granitic terrain: Implications for chemical weathering intensity evaluation

Haowei Mei et al.

Summary: Continental weathering is essential in connecting Earth's spheres, shaping landscapes, and regulating chemical cycles and global climate. A study in southeast China on granitic regolith profiles reveals intensive chemical weathering in top-soil samples, with depletion of plagioclase and K-feldspar and formation of kaolinite. The underlying oxidized-soil samples show higher chemical index of alteration values and enrichment of certain elements, indicating the importance of petrographic and mineralogical proxies in evaluating weathering intensity for regolith profiles.
