Evaluation of strength properties of clay treated by nano-SiO2 subjected to freeze-thaw cycles

Foad Changizi et al.

Summary: The study found that adding nano-SiO2 can improve and prevent the resistance reduction of clay during freeze-thaw cycles. After 9 cycles, the unconfined compressive strength and shear strength of clay treated with 1.0% nano-SiO2 increased by 16% and 21% respectively compared to natural clay without freeze-thaw cycles. Scanning electron microscopy images show that nano-SiO2 produces whiskers under thermal stresses caused by freeze-thaw cycles, leading to a significant increase in clay's mechanical properties by creating filamentary networks.

Durability evaluation and life prediction of fiber concrete with fly ash based on entropy weight method and grey theory

Yuan Qin et al.

Summary: This paper examines the high levels of sulfates in the soil of Nazixia area in Qinghai Province, China, and their impact on dam construction. Concrete specimens with varying fly ash content were tested for sulfate attack through dry-wet cycle tests, and a new comprehensive durability evaluation method was proposed. Using the GM(1,1) model, the study predicted the changes in concrete durability under different conditions.

Mechanical behaviour and constitutive model of tailing soils subjected to freeze-thaw cycles

Youneng Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that cement failure and the expansion of mean pore size inside tailings are the main factors adversely affecting the mechanical and deformation properties of tailing soils. With an increasing number of freeze-thaw cycles, the modulus and strength of tailing soils decrease, while the trend of volume expansion decreases as well. Additionally, a fractional order constitutive model based on tested results and fractional calculus theory was proposed to provide qualitative and quantitative modeling of tailing soils subjected to freeze-thaw cycles.

Effects of thermal cycles on microstructural and functional properties of nano treated clayey soil

Shervin Ahmadi et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the simultaneous use of glass fiber and nano-SiO2 can effectively enhance the compressive strength of low plasticity clay under thermal cycles, with the optimal mixture ratio being 1.0% nano-SiO2 and 2.5% glass fiber. This combination significantly increased the strength properties and modified the structure of the soil.

Experimental Study of Mesostructure Deformation Characteristics of Unsaturated Tailings with Different Moisture Content

Weile Geng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of moisture content on the deformation characteristics of unsaturated tailings and found that different moisture contents of tailings exhibit similar deformation characteristics under load, which can be divided into four stages, with an optimal moisture content corresponding to maximum deformation resistance. The influence of the liquid bridge regime on the mesostructure deformation of unsaturated tailings was also discussed in this study.

Spatial state distribution and phase transition of non-uniform water in soils: Implications for engineering and environmental sciences

Lianhai Zhang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that water in the interface is non-uniform, with varying pressure and density distributions, which differs from traditional beliefs. By using the diffuse interface model to analyze the dynamics and characteristics of non-uniform water, theoretical support for determining the hydraulic properties of soil water is provided.

Effects of A low-carbon emission additive on mechanical properties of fine-grained soil under freeze-thaw cycles

Shervin Ahmadi et al.

Summary: The resistance properties of fine-grained soils can decrease under freeze-thaw cycles, and adding glass fiber can enhance the tensile strength of the soil. However, its effect on preventing the resistance reduction caused by freeze-thaw cycles is not significant.
