Effect of Modulated Helical Magnetic Field on Solidifying Segregation of Sn-3.5 Wt Pct Pb Alloy in a Directional Solidification

Long Cheng et al.

Summary: The study introduces a modulated permanent helical magnetic field to improve segregation during directional solidification in a binary alloy, reducing solute segregation otherwise caused by conventional helical magnetic fields. Experimental results demonstrate that this magnetic field, with an appropriate modulation frequency, can not only promote columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) but also has advantages over natural convection and conventional electromagnetically forced convection.

Influence of natural convection during melting and solidification of paraffin in a longitudinally finned shell-and-tube latent thermal energy storage on the applicability of developed numerical models

Mateo Kirincic et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigated melting and solidification processes in shell-and-tube type LTES with longitudinal fins, developed two mathematical models, and validated them through experiments. The model neglecting natural convection is suitable for solidification modeling, while the model including natural convection is suitable for melting modeling.
