Hydrometallurgical recycling of waste NdFeB magnets: design of experiment, optimisation of low concentrations of sulphuric acid leaching and process analysis

Emircan Uysal et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dissolution of NdFeB magnet powders in sulfuric acid solution and found that the concentration of sulfuric acid is a key factor for the dissolution of iron and REEs. The solid-to-liquid ratio and stirring speed had minor effects on the dissolution. The maximum extraction of iron and REEs was achieved under optimal conditions.

Sustainable Recovery, Recycle of Critical Metals and Rare Earth Elements from Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment (Circuits, Solar, Wind) and Their Reusability in Additive Manufacturing Applications: A Review

Vasileios Stratiotou Efstratiadis et al.

Summary: The demand and prices of Rare Earth Elements (REE) have rapidly increased due to the demand for high-efficiency, low-energy consumption materials. The monopoly of some countries on REE has hindered the shift towards sustainability and renewable energy sources. The isolation, recovery, and recycle of REE from waste electronic equipment (WEEE) can lead to significant economic benefits. Adding critical raw materials (RM) from WEEE to filaments used for composite material synthesis can enhance the performance and commercialization of final products.

Microwave-Assisted Carbothermic Reduction of Discarded Rare Earth Magnets for Recovery of Neodymium and Iron Values

Himanshu Tanvar et al.

Summary: The carbothermic reduction of crushed NdFeB waste magnets through microwave irradiation shows promise for separating metallic iron and rare earth elements, resulting in high purity iron balls and rare earth oxides. The microwave route is more efficient and consumes less energy compared to conventional methods.

Leaching of Rare Earth Elements from NdFeB Magnets without Mechanical Pretreatment by Sulfuric (H2SO4) and Hydrochloric (HCl) Acids

Anna Klemettinen et al.

Summary: A simplified method for leaching rare earth elements from NdFeB magnets was investigated, allowing selective leaching of NdFeB while leaving nickel in a solid state. The use of hydrochloric and sulfuric acids as leaching agents can increase the concentration of rare earth ions in the obtained solutions.

NdFeB Magnets Recycling Process: An Alternative Method to Produce Mixed Rare Earth Oxide from Scrap NdFeB Magnets

Elif Emil Kaya et al.

Summary: Neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) magnets play a crucial role in various technological applications due to their exceptional magnetic properties. It is expected that the production of NdFeB will increase significantly in the near future, leading to higher demand for rare earth elements (REE) and making their recovery essential. This study proposes a new promising process flowsheet for the recovery of rare earth elements from NdFeB magnets, which involves acid baking, hydrolysis, and ultrasonic spray pyrolysis methods. The synthesized mixed REE-oxide powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, showing spherical particles with sizes between 362 and 540 nm.
