A review of gold extraction using alternatives to cyanide: Focus on current status and future prospects of the novel eco-friendly synthetic gold lixiviants

Yan Zhang et al.

Summary: Cyanide is highly toxic and poses environmental risks in gold extraction. Extensive research has been conducted to find eco-friendly alternatives, leading to the successful development of novel synthetic gold lixiviants (NESGLs) such as Jinchan. These NESGLs are less toxic compared to cyanide and have achieved comparable gold recoveries without altering the cyanidation process. The growing industrial applications of NESGLs suggest a potential shift away from cyanide dominance.

Leaching of Gold and Silver from a Complex Sulfide Concentrate in Copper-Tartrate-Thiosulfate Solutions

Junnan Chen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the leaching behaviors of gold and silver from a complex sulfide concentrate in copper-tartrate-thiosulfate solutions. It is found that increasing the temperature and concentrations of copper, tartrate, and thiosulfate can promote gold leaching, and a suitable pulp pH is critical for gold and silver leaching. The recycling of leaching solutions is also important.

Caustic potash assisted roasting of the Nigerian ferro-columbite concentrate and guanidine carbonate-induced precipitation: A novel technique for extraction of Nb-Ta mixed-oxides

Jean Baptiste Habinshuti et al.

Summary: The study focused on the sustainable extraction of niobium (Nb) and tantalum (Ta) from a ferro-columbite concentrate using alkali-assisted roasting and water-based leaching. The selective recovery using guanidine carbonate salt as a precipitating agent resulted in high extraction yield. The novel process presented a more environmentally friendly and efficient technique than the traditional hydrofluoric acid method.

Recovery of gold from refractory gold ores: Effect of pyrite on the stability of the thiourea leaching system

Hong Qin et al.

Summary: The presence of pyrite in thiourea leaching systems significantly accelerates the decomposition rate of thiourea, affecting the stability of the system. After removing sulfide by roasting, the gold recovery efficiency increased significantly. Efforts to improve the efficiency of gold recovery are hindered by the high consumption of thiourea caused by the presence of impurities like pyrite in the ores.

Gold Extraction from an Oxide Ore by Thiourea Leaching with Hydrogen Peroxide as an Oxidant

Mert Terzi

Summary: This study investigated the effects of thiourea on gold dissolution efficiency for extracting gold from oxide gold ores in the eastern Anatolia region, Turkey. The results showed that the highest efficiency was achieved at -38 μm particle size, 120 minutes leaching time, 1 mol/dm(3) thiourea concentration, pH 1, and 80°C pulp temperature. Thiourea leaching could be considered as an alternative method for gold dissolution from oxide gold ores.
