A review on Corrosion of High Entropy Alloys: Exploring the Interplay Between Corrosion Properties, Alloy Composition, Passive Film Stability and Materials Selection

Camila Boldrini Nascimento et al.

Summary: The corrosion resistance of high entropy alloys was reviewed in this work, with a focus on the correlation between alloy composition, passive film stability, and corrosion properties. The study developed a materials selection procedure based on the Ashby approach, ranking different alloys based on corrosion current densities and pitting potentials. The results showed a strong dependence of corrosion resistance on passive film stability, with the uniformity of microstructure and distribution of alloying elements also playing a role in enhancing corrosion resistance.

Summary: This study investigated the microstructure, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of a novel high-entropy alloy. The correlation between mechanical properties and microstructure was examined using nanoindentation and Vickers microhardness measurements. The alloy exhibited a unique microstructure with a body-centered cubic phase and interdendritic phase. Thermal treatments resulted in the formation of intermetallic particles and a sigma-phase. The alloy demonstrated good mechanical properties, as indicated by the hardness values obtained from nanoindentation.

Summary: Monolithic B4C and B4C-based ceramics incorporating FeNiCoCrMo dual-phase high entropy alloys (HEAs) were produced by spark plasma sintering (SPS) in this study. The addition of HEAs enhanced the densification behavior and increased the hardness and fracture toughness values of the samples. The highest density and the best mechanical properties were achieved with 2.00 vol.% HEA addition.

Effect of the grain size on the corrosion behavior of CoCrFeMnNi HEAs in a 0.5 M H2SO4 solution

Ying Wang et al.

Summary: The corrosion resistance of the CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy depends on the grain size. Fine-grained HEA promotes galvanic corrosion at grain boundaries, while coarse-grained HEA lacks ionic diffusion channels for a stable passive film. Medium-grained HEA shows improved chemical stability and mechanical strength of passive films.
