Superior high-temperature tensile properties of aluminum matrix composites reinforced with carbon nanotubes

L. Cao et al.

Summary: The relatively low strength of aluminum alloys and Al matrix composites at high temperatures has limited their applications. This study found that CNTs/Al composites showed improved reinforcing effects at elevated temperatures, achieving a high tensile strength of 205 MPa, superior to most available Al matrix composites.

Carbon nanotube (CNT) metal composites exhibit greatly reduced radiation damage

Penghui Cao et al.

Summary: The addition of one-dimensional carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to aluminum (Al) to create a metal composite enhances its radiation resistance by promoting defect migration and improving radiation tolerance. This method of controlling defect migration represents a promising opportunity to enhance the radiation resistance of nuclear materials.

The growth of anti-friction and wear-resistance TiO2 nanotube arrays driven by residual stress

Yuan Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the influence of residual stress on the frictional properties of TiO2 nanotubes, showing that increased residual stress can enhance the growth rate of nanotubes and reduce friction coefficient and wear rates. Additionally, experimental results establish a connection between theoretical calculations and the testing of surface residual stress.

Fatigue probability model for AWJ-cut steel including surface roughness and residual stress

Gustav Hultgren et al.

Summary: An analytical model is presented to analyze the fatigue probability of abrasive waterjet cut high strength steel, with a focus on surface roughness, residual stress, tensile strength, and number of cycles to failure. Experimental results show good agreement with the proposed model, with less than 4% error in the predicted mean fatigue limit. The model's applicability in a probabilistic design framework is demonstrated through an engineering example involving finite-element simulation.

On prominent TRIP effect and non-basal slip in a TWIP high entropy alloy during high-pressure torsion processing

A. K. Chandan et al.

Summary: The severe plastic deformation response of a face centered cubic twinning induced plasticity high entropy alloy subjected to high-pressure torsion was investigated. The study found that the alloy demonstrated an extensive transformation induced plasticity effect and nano-structuring with heavily dislocated structure during HPT processing. The research also quantified the fraction of c c+a dislocations and discussed their evolution in the studied alloy.

Mechanical properties of aluminium-graphene/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) metal matrix composites: Advancement, opportunities and perspective

Virat Khanna et al.

Summary: The rapid development of the mechanical industry requires new and reliable materials, with Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) being one of the prominent candidates. Carbon nanostructures, such as graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), are found to be excellent support reinforcement materials in MMCs. The study evaluates the impact of graphene/CNTs reinforcement in aluminum for improvement in mechanical properties, as well as reviewing different processing methods.
