High Resistance-Training Volume Enhances Muscle Thickness in Resistance-Trained Men

Felipe A. Brigatto et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different volumes of resistance training on muscular strength and hypertrophy. The findings showed that higher training volumes can increase muscle strength and muscle thickness.

A Subject-Tailored Variability-Based Platform for Overcoming the Plateau Effect in Sports Training: A Narrative Review

Ram Gelman et al.

Summary: The plateau effect in training is a significant obstacle that affects both professional athletes and average individuals. The lack of continuous improvement in muscle-nerve-axis performance and cardiorespiratory parameters is due to compensatory adaptation mechanisms. Overcoming this plateau has proven to be only partially successful, and it remains a significant unmet need for individuals with chronic neuromuscular, cardiopulmonary, and metabolic diseases. This review discusses the obstacles in overcoming the training plateau and proposes implementing subject-tailored variability patterns to prevent and overcome this plateau in muscle and cardiorespiratory performance.

Effects of Low-Load/High-Repetition Resistance Training on Exercise Capacity, Health Status, and Limb Muscle Adaptation in Patients With Severe COPD A Randomized Controlled Trial

Andre Nyberg et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of single-limb low-load/high-repetition resistance training (LLHR-RT) compared to two-limb LLHR-RT on exercise capacity, health status, muscle function, and limb adaptations in patients with severe COPD. Single-limb LLHR-RT did not significantly increase 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) compared to two-limb LLHR-RT, but it did reduce exertional dyspnea and enable more patients to reach clinically relevant improvements in 6MWD. Both training methods improved exercise capacity, health status, muscle function, and led to physiological muscle adaptations in COPD patients.

The knowns and unknowns of neural adaptations to resistance training

Jakob Skarabot et al.

Summary: The initial increases in force production with resistance training are primarily due to neural adaptations. Studies suggest that resistance training alters intracortical inhibition, but the exact location of neural adaptation remains uncertain.

Resistance Training Load Effects on Muscle Hypertrophy and Strength Gain: Systematic Review and Network Meta-analysis

P. E. D. R. O. LOPEZ et al.

Summary: The study found that while muscle hypertrophy improvements seem to be load independent, increases in muscle strength are superior in high-load RT programs. Untrained participants exhibit greater muscle hypertrophy, whereas undertaking more RT sessions provides superior gains in those with previous training experience.

Specific Contribution of Quadriceps Muscle Strength, Endurance, and Power to Functional Exercise Capacity in People With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Multicenter Study

Sarah Gephine et al.

Summary: Different functional muscle properties, including quadriceps strength, endurance, and power, are associated with functional exercise capacity in people with COPD. Among these properties, muscle power has the strongest contribution to the 6-minute walking distance and 1-minute sit-to-stand test performance in individuals with COPD.

Loading Recommendations for Muscle Strength, Hypertrophy, and Local Endurance: A Re-Examination of the Repetition Continuum

Brad J. Schoenfeld et al.

Summary: Traditional recommendations for resistance training based on the repetition continuum theory may not fully represent the wide spectrum of muscular adaptations that can be achieved with varying loads. New paradigms are emerging in the field of strength training that challenge previous assumptions and offer potential for optimizing muscular adaptations.
